I've been out of Vegas and anything of gambling/slots for too long, but in younger days (late 60s/early 70s) a bunch of us used to drive over from So. CA on a Friday night until Sunday...very few if any tokens yet and most all of Morgans and Peace dols were in use for all the slots. Was not uncommon to win modest $100-$150 jackpots plus some smaller ones within an hour or so if playing up to 3 coins per pull, and the silver cartwheels would all come pouring out. Do today's slots use real coins of any denomination anymore (that is, if today's clad coinage is anything of "real" coins :woot:)...?

Not really. Gambling can turn into a sickness really quickly for some. I knew a guy who owned and operated an antique shop in Vegas for a number of years. He had some really interesting stories to tell about his experiences dealing with chronic gamblers on a daily basis. He was glad to finally throw in the towel and move away from that hell hole.

And if you are a known gambler with millions, they'll fly you in on one of their private jets.

Yes. The people that dump silver like that have no business being here. Most of the people here during the week also. They are still not going back to work. I hate having to stand in line at Starbucks.

I believe some still do in down town Las Vegas. I remember trying to sleep with the coin ringing in my head after playing and partying all night.

Slot machines have evolved over the years. 40 years ago it would take someone a few minutes to go through, for example, $20 worth of quarters if they were playing the max per pull on a slot machine. Now, with the invention of the virtual slot machine that takes a card with prepaid funds on it, the same $20 can be played in only a matter of a minute or less. They've eliminated the time it takes you to get your coins, put them in the machine and pull the lever. All that is done is the card is inserted with the prepaid funds and you sit their pushing a button. I don't even think they have mechanical wheels anymore that spins around. It's all computerized on a color monitor. The mechanical wheels used to take a few seconds to spin and come to a stop. The computerized color monitor wheels take about 1/4th the amount of time to start and stop, compared to the mechanical wheels. They shortened the time on everything so more time can be spent taking your money. Because that's all it is, taking your money. They toss out a few bones very once in a while just to prime the crowd and throw everyone into a feeding frenzy, much like tossing a french fry out into a flock of hungry arse seagulls.

I didn't know about these types of "improvements".

That is sort of sad. Another victim of enjoyable Americana, when it was fun, and not a timeclock.

I'll bet you can't even buy some time with another guy's wife in Vegas anymore.

Is this a small, privately owned, casino? I'm sure the big ones would prohibit tellers from doing that.
I quit playing slot machines, or gambling, when they stopped taking and giving real coins. No fun any more.
