It went on sale yesterday at 12PM. Limit of one per household. For 'grins' I signed on and put one in my order 'cart'..........and left it there until this evening. It was still there, as of this posting, so I pulled the trigger on it. Another honking hunk of over priced silver for the collection. Oh well......:)

True. I do indeed like mint medals, and have purchased many in the aftermarket at a substantial reduction regarding original price. The problem with this one is that I don't think I will be able to pick this piece up in the aftermarket. Nobody wants it except me. Hence the itchy trigger finger........:)

It is not the most beautiful of medals for sure. I hate to even imagine the Navy Medal.

The only one I would possibly have an interest in, seeing as I've been in the Navy for the last 20 years. That being said, the Mint's medals are less than stellar usually so I would probably pass.

There are a few mint medals (The Lady Liberty medals) that I would like to buy that are no longer available. However, they are not cheaper than the original mint issue price :(

I spent most of 5 years in the USAF and my brother spent 8. No, I did not buy the medal. I am getting a Type 2 ASE and then my US Mint business is finished.

Same here. Since I served on 3 different carriers, as active duty and reserves, I would buy one just for that.

The longest I spend on a carrier was my day trip to the Truman when it was in Portsmouth, UK when I was stationed in London.
I hung out with a couple of people onboard who I went to bootcamp and I will never forget that we drank the pubs dry:

I've done plenty of time on destroyers, subs, and boots on the ground since then. Not sure I could've lived the carrier life though.

I kind of liked carrier life. I served on the Saratoga, Carl Vinson, and Theodore Roosevelt. Right out of college, I was OCS. Got commissioned, and they found I had skills in mainframe programming. That made me a tactical officer, which got me fast promotions, to O-3, and then O-4. So my experience was not that typical swabee stuff—I had tactical O.S. Planning and battle flight group duties, as a non-aviator.

I went to Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, RI and then taught at Surface Warfare Officer School after dropping from the program. Outside my bedroom window were docked the Forrestal and the Saratoga.
I will be retiring as a dirty enlisted guy albeit with a very specialized skill set.

My oldest son served on the Carl Vinson first tour. He was awarded Sailor of the Quarter on that first tour. A pretty big deal for a brand new carrier with 5000 + sailors on board.

He was fortunate to serve on the Vinson first cruise. That was a celebrity ship to begin with. Great quarters, and facilities. I was head tactical officer on the Vinson, as a LtCmndr.

You got a good billet there. The skill set is absolutely crucial. Were you ever in Mayport, in J’ville? I was there for a while.
