    Very cool, @dltsrq; thanks for posting this! ...It helped me out by way of stylistic precedent for the Himyarite series, a good couple of centuries later.

    No idea, but if forced to guess, I'd say some kind of acid. Can anyone enlighten us? It looks like they've removing encrustation, not just toning.

    Yes, judging from the photo in the article, whatever chemical is being used, it is completely stripping the surfaces, which is not necessarily a good thing, but I guess it is quick.
