Do marks count in terms of grading?
It seems this coin doesn't have an excessive amount of wear, but it does have a lot of various marks on it.

I gave it the lowest grade available because the grade I wanted to give it, AU 55, wasn't available.

In this case, the coin is difinitiely not AU. There is no wear on this coin and it was popped righto out of the Cello. In fact, no 1973 Ikes were made for circulation. A rare coin might be circulated, but that would because someone popped it out of the mint packaging and spent it.

I wonder where all of the marks on this coin came from. Like the marks across his nose, on his chin and neck.
    Jes' wondering.

Some were there before the coins were struck. Others came before they were put in the packaging or even after being packaged. Clad dollars received very little care.

they were likely on the Panchet before the strike.

If they were on the planchet before the strike, wouldn't the strike have tended to flatten them out?

Some were and others came after the strike. Not easy to learn the difference.

Yes with most coins but clad dollars are large and the strike was not always strong enough to hide them.

This one is tough due the the scratches and possible bag marks. But having seen some of the other ones and the grades they received I went with a MS63 anyway. To much going on I think for anything higher.

If Panchette marks are not generally considered in the Ike grades, then what is used to deterimine MS64 from MS65s on these coins?

Like other types of coins, hits and scratches that came after being struck. Nice luster is also a big factor.

Congrats on the grade but ... IMHO, I don't think it would qualify for a green bean sticker.
