Ok I'll list a few numismatic items and you determine Hot or Not (and your reason) 1. PD(business strike)PD(satin)S(silver)S(clad) PCGS state quarter set in pr/ms 67 HOT or NOT? 2. 2006 reverse proof silver American Eagle HOT or NOT? 3. High grade certified Mercury dimes from the 1940's HOT or NOT? 4. 2007 business strike dimes, nickels and cents certified ms67 HOT or NOT?
I think once they start the next quarter series a lot of the public is going to be totally tired of the whole thing, and it will bring down prices on all the state quarters. High-grade Mercuries, in my opinion, will always be hot--you have the combination of a beautiful coin and loyal collectors. Plus many new collectors who started with current coins move into Mercuries. I don't know about the 2007's grading MS67. I'm a current-coin collector, have been for years, and it just doesn't much interest me. Why pay such a premium when I can potentially get that same coin in a bank roll? So what's going to be the next true Hot thing? Not the new quarters, not the Presidential dollars. Next year's new cent will be fun, but not Hot.
maybe you could find one in a couple of boxes but not in a roll unless you are prone to winning the lottery on a regular basis.
Very true. I've been following the roll-searching thread here and it does seem like they go through a LOT of rolls.
That 2006 reverse proof Silver Eagle is pretty hot right now. It has cooled off a bit, but its still desireable, a beautiful coin, and has relitively low mintage numbers.
HOT AND WILL ALWAYS SCORCH YOU UNLESS THERE IS GOLD IS THE MORGAN DOLLAR. They bring $5 at least over melt on the Bay in poor condition and then when you get into VAMS, MS66+, Toned, CC's. The only comparable are Lincoln's and Indian Heads, IMHO.
The answer is None are hot. The answer is None are hot and none are rare. Folks please there is tons of this stuff out there, tons and if they are hot (in any circles) it's a made market certain to fail IMO. I was with 35 dealers and 100 vest pocket guys yesterday and none of them were looking to buy, trying to sell, or in anyway wanting these items that I heard.
Perhaps 2007 high grade business strike dimes are not popular at this time but you can't say that there are tons of them.
I agree with bhp3rd. Of course, this all assumes that "hot" means you might be able to make some money. If you're a collector, it's what you're looking for that's HOT!!! Since I have a lot more time than money available to me, I do a lot of surfing. The general impression I get is that it's not the time to be "investing" in numismatic items. Heck, who knows, the value of gold and silver could plummet as well. But back to the original question. I think the Reverse Proof will be popular for some time to come. I agree also with another poster that the quarter sets may lose a bit of their luster as the series keeps going on forever and also, almost everyone who wanted one has one, so I don' see too much upside. The possible exception might be a silver proof collection of the quarters. They are quite awesome when seen all together.
