hiho off to work we go

I found a ticket stub on the way to work tonight from the Broadway play Mamma Mia. Someone paid $251.50 for a premium orchestra seat on New Years Day, 2010. And as people generally go to plays in pairs someone spent $503.00 for about three hours of entertainment for two people.

As much as I do enjoy live theatre if I am going to spend $500 on something these days it will usually be a coin or two. Or three. I guarantee that three coins will provide me with more than three hours of entertainment.

So I thought we should have a poll. With a little twist at the end.

Would you rather go to a top Broadway show on New Years Day, you and your guest sitting way up front in the plush orchestra seats with an amazing view of everything.

Or would you rather have a solid gold Swiss Schutzenfest Medal, one of only 400 minted. Not 400000, 400. About the size and weight of a US $10 gold piece.

You can have either the gold medal or take your wife/husband to a hit Broadway show.

Please cast your vote for one or the other.
And then please have your wife/husband cast their vote.

I know, you can only vote once so you will have to register your spouse here for this to work, hopefully you are still on speaking terms after the holidays.
No one said this would be easy.

And if you can’t get your spouse to vote then that’s OK too.
This is supposed to be fun, not work.

At the very least let's consider this a science experiment to see if we get a 50/50 split on the voting.
Or otherwise. Humor me if you will.

Poll closes on 02-01-10. Thanks for participating! :p

Gold medal, without a second thought. And not just because I'm a coin fanatic.

    1) I live in NY so broadway shows have no appeal and are long-known to be the refuge of tourists from the Mid West and pretentious manhattanites.

    2) I can't STAND singing and dancing.

    3) Dude, it's GOLD! Everyone should own gold!

Let me see...a bunch of ABBA songs recycled into a sing and dance play or a stunning...and I mean REAL stunning rare medal. Tough choice :)

I would give you that gold coin if you promised not to make me go to a Broadway show.

    lol

I used to feel that way but to my surprise really enjoyed a Broadway rendition of 'Grease' that I attended with a loved one many years ago.

That said, like the rest of you, I'd take the medal.

Oh, and the loved one's long gone and won't be voting. :)

Well, $250 for an unforgettable theater night with someone special, on a special day, why not? In all other cases I would pick the medal - not exactly my preferred style either, but it would be something tangible and "keepable".

By the way, where exactly did Yann Guyonvarc'h (guess it was him) trash the ticket? ;)

Depending who you take, she can be pretty "tangible" too. At least if you're spending $200 on her!!

I don't know, I think there are plenty of women that would rather take the gold medal. I'm no woman, but I certainly would. Now, if those were tickets to the premier of a "Sex and the City" movie, then I could see some womenfolk being swayed. ;)

As a certified possessor of female organs, I can guarantee that I would prefer almost ANYTHING to a sex and the city.

As they said on Family Guy: "oh it's that show about 3 hookers and their mother".

I think I read a story about this once, she cashed in her ticket to buy him a coin, he sold his coin to buy her a ticket.

Depending on which subway I take from Penn Station I either walk past the stage door for "Wicked" or the stage door for "Mamma Mia". This was found a few feet from the Mamma Mia stage door.

I thought about Photoshopping out Yann Guyonvarc'hs' name on the ticket stub but there is a trash bin on every block of Midtown Manhattan and I have little tolerance for litterbugs.

With the voting at 18 for the gold and 2 for the ticket either none of the spouses are voting or we have discovered why rare coins are soaring in value while Broadway shows rarely last more than a year.

I'll easily take the coin, there's just no comparison. Heck, I'm surely not wining and dining anyone. Besides, a few hundred dollars to go to a Broadway show? C'mon buddy, this is a slam dunk poll for sure.

Aah. :) Nah, leaving the name there is OK; don't think he actually is what could be called a celebrity. But I read about him some time ago, and you don't come across such a name very often.

My friend does have an opinion too, by the way. I asked her, and she basically said: Expensive Mamma Mia tickets and some old medal, what kind of choice is that? So I won't vote here ...
