Why IS the U.S. Minting Dollar Coins?

Not even close. The Fed's gigantic inventory of dollar coins stands at 857 million...but the number of $1 notes in circulation is over 9000 million. The Mint would have to work overtime striking $1 coins for years before the $1 bill could ever be discontinued.

I see kids buying sodas with plastic.

I'm guessing plastic will take up the slack, even for low end purchases.

Hey! I'm happy. I just received a Native American Sac 2009-P in change at the Thai restaurant. I'm glad: I was wanting to see this one.

the making of the dollar coin will stop the problem we now have with mutilated money that paper money causes, which in turn means we have to make more paper money to replace it. in fact most mutilated paper money never gets reported, the value of are dollar is getting lower because we cant just keep making money with no cause.

The US $1 bill should be withdrawn and eliminated as an outdated waste. The $2 bill should be eliminated and replaced with a new coin as well.

Getting people to use $1 coins while $1 bills are still being produced has a catch 22 effect. People don't have them to spend because they never get them in change anywhere. Businesses don't give them out in change because the customers only give them bills. How do you change that?

    Prediction...

The dollar will lose value quicker than any upsurge in demand for these coins...resulting in a massive coin melt sometime in the future.

Additionally, these coins don't seem to stand up well to environmental conditions. I've had 40 of them sitting loose on my desk since 2007 and they're developing some very unsightly corrosion spots.

Cherrypicking and salting away the very best business strike examples now may not be such a dumb thing to do...in the off chance this predition comes true.

I like the dollar coins and collect them. In reality, the only coins struck by the mint that I use are the nickel, dime, and quarter. Thus, we should get rid of the cent, half dollar, sac dollar, and presidential dollars. The mint is 3 for 7, which isn't a bad batting average.

I was under the impression that the native american dollar was still being minted only for collectors and not circulation since 2001,but I could be wrong. I think part of the problem is Congress passes laws concerning the minting of coin series without thinking of the long range consequences.

Agreed -- the $1 note has to go if the $1 coin is ever to be widely circulated. We should probably go the extra step and also strike a bi-metal $2 coin while we're at it and leave paper currency to denominations of $5 and higher.

I have to agree that congress didn't seem to think things through by minting five separate dollar coins per year that will never circulate, and producing paper dollars to prevent their use on top of it. Now the Sacs are still produced for circulation. You can get them for face through the direct ship program, as I have. By law they have to be produced until the prez series has run its course.
