I have recently gone through all of my coins and several of them could easily be considered AU, I check the current price as shown by Greysheet and make a decision on whether to hold or sell. I do NOT use the prices put forth by Coin World or others since those prices differ considerably. I also check locally to see what the coins shop is paying for "junk" silver, if the price is right I consider selling. The bottom line is, you have to be comfortable with your decision. My advice, since you're only talking about a couple hundred coins (it will go faster then you think), sort through them. Chances are you didn't give much thought about what they were at the time you collected them and have forgotten if you had anything special. I was sorting through my Morgan's one day looking to offload some duplicated and upon a second look realized that I was holding a 1890 CC. To this day I still can't remember buying it. It will be worth your time to take a second look. You just might find a hidden treasure you didn't know you had. At least you can let them go without lingering regrets. As for considering ASE's, as others have stated. You already have silver so why sell at a loss only to buy at a premium? That's a double loss in my book. Good luck.
I'm with you. Give the headache of checking them to somebody who likes to collect coins. Just make sure you get around melt value for them.
Wouldn't think $40 would take that long or be that difficult to review...unless all dimes (400)...so maybe you're just overestimating the time/trouble it would take. Pretty sure it might be worth it if many are as you say, "AU or better...mint state," etc.
Randy IF you don't mind. can you elaborate on the bags of storage locker 90% silver. Trading to who? Kinda interested in how you unload them and dont check for premium stuff. I know a few people who find coins in lockers locally and have put the word out that I'd be a buyer. Our local G&S store pays no more then 25% back of spot...I figured I could do better than that Especially on the premium stuff.
When my floor begins sagging from the weight (kidding sorta)…. I carry them to my LCS and swap him for some pre33 gold. We always do a bit of dickering and I am fair and let him turn a profit. Usually ends up about a 10% swing once the dust has settled.
There is one item that people don't think about as junk silver. That is all the modern commemorative silver dollars the mint has struck since 1982 or 83. Back in 2007 or 2008 I decided to increase my silver holdings. I think silver was running between $12 and $15. There was a local shop that would visit and I would pick up fine to extra fine common Morgan and Peace dollars. He would sometimes get in mishandled silver eagles or even SAE that were colorized. I would buy them for spot. Sometimes there was nothing wrong with them but he had to many in stock and I would get those for spot. Then I noticed he had a large amount of silver commemorative dollars both proof and mint state all in their original packaging. Some even had clade half dollars in the set. Anyway I ended up buying about 100 of them. I was buying them for $14 to $16 even with the clade half. So I was buying 90% silver dollars in mint state and proof for $14 to $16. I still have them and they are sitting in their original capsules. Based on what I've seen at shows and other coin shops there are a lot of dealers that are overloaded with these coins and you maybe able make a deal with a dealer to take them off the hands. If you offer to buy them in quantity and tell them why your buying them you may get a great deal on them. I would offer 10% below spot. If the dealer wants to get rid of them you should be able to make a deal. Keep in mind a lot of dealers may have a lot in inventory would happy to get rid of them. If your able to make a deal don't spend a lot of time examining the coins. If their in their capsule pick it up give the coin a quick look to make sure it's not damaged and set it in your buy pile. Don't make it look like you looking for proof or mint state 70 coins you may piss off the dealer. You may give him the idea your cherry picking him. Not cool, if you told him your buying them as bullion only. Keep in mind that you may end up with 10 to 20 percent of them being 70's. Have full hunting.
Save a few of the pretty ones. Your never going to see them again. Look. But some in 2X2’s. Give them to the ladies in your life. You say AU OR BETTER. Your supposed to keep those. You got to be kidding Right?
Yeah that’s my approach. Plus I give the grandkids pure Junk. They love it. All their books come out when I walk in. Anything that fills a hole is what it’s all about. Plus they’ll remember me down the road a piece
