Why am I saving so many coins?

Spent some time today organizing my coin mess. After going through a lot of what I have, sorting them, and putting them away......I started to wonder why I am keeping so many, that in reality are nice, but not going to help me much in retirement. I have a couple rolls of MS 70's 80' and early 90's MS quarters. Rolls of pre 1960 nickels...A roll of variety quarters (in god we rust, pooping horse, spitting horse etc..). Many unopened rolls of single type quarters from 2017-2021. (ie all 2019 lowell P's etc). A whole roll of Bicentennial Quarters, album toned, and MS condition from a collection dump I got at the bank(granted THOSE are cool). But many things I SHOULD dump but just can't bring myself to do. I have over $100 in common Ikes, which I just can't part with.....I have the 40%ers set aside, but the rest are stashed away for some reason! I have a few rolls of MS states quarters which I have found 1 at a time, not really valuable, but I kept them because they are in excellent condition. A roll of 2009 quarters because of low mintage numbers. Granted a few are in excellent condition, and keepers, but I still keep them all.
I have gotten better, and dumped a few things I collected early on and saved, but have a hard time getting rid of other stuff I really can think of no good reason to keep. Anybody else have that problem?

Yeah I have a hard time getting rid of anything that I think is "cool".
Luckily, I don't seem to have it as bad as you :p

I have many rolls of UNC. State quarter rolls. They won't be worth much more than face value for a long time. Can't part with them though because they're 15 - 20 year old uncirculated rolls.

Funny anecdote...My work has a small shoppette that you can buy drinks, snacks, etc...at. The last 3 times I have been there, I've paid with cash and received 2 quarters back each time. The first time I received 2 Unc Wisconsin P quarters, the 2nd time, I received 2 Unc Alaska P quarters, and the third time, I received 2 Unc Indiana P quarters.
I think someone at my work is dumping their state quarters that have been sitting around for years.

I'm dumping my presidential dollars. I have rolls of them up to about 2011. I take some in my pocket to the golf course. I give them as tips to the people who work in refreshments.

    Keep some, spend some.

I used to buy rolls of cents at banks in the '80s, but stopped buying when I was getting too many rolls of new cents. Now as I thin out the old collection I spend ten to fifteen shiny mid-80s cents each time I use an automated check-out. Don't know what else to do with them as the overhead costs outweigh any collector value.

I was a young active collector when Mercury changed to Roosevelt, Walking Liberty changed to Franklin, when Franklin changed to Kennedy, when Wheat changed to Memorial, and, when Silver changed to Clad. Many of us back then held on to the past thinking it would completely disappear. I held too much stuff hoping I would have use for it later and not wanting it to go away.

And, as life would have it, I have 13 grandkids and 21 great grandkids. All that stuff I held onto got distributed to them. I hope it will rub off on them.

Wow, Meow was not alive at the time to experience silver in circulating coins. That would have been so much more stuff to hoard.

I need another safe designated for coins.
    Do I have a problem?

Yes, I can't seem to find a used one I like locally :D

Spare spending money is one way of looking at it.

Unfortunately with the high mintage of modern coins those won't see any significant premium for a long time. Like maybe your great grandkids could make a few bucks.

I worked in a shop for about 10 years until I ended up on disability and believe me, dealers looking for such coins are few and far between.

You might consider using those to buy a coin already proven to retain value. We had a customer like that. We called him the "cooler guy" because the first time he came in he had a small cooler full of rolls of state quarters that his uncle had hoarded.
    He knew nothing about coins.

The good news was he got hooked on real coins and did his homework. He ended up buying things like 1877 Indian cents, 1955 double die Lincolns and 16D Mercuries to name a few.
It all started from rolls of quarters.

I still buy the occasional roll of halves or dollars at the bank. I spend them. Not long ago I ran into a slew of BU 2017 halves. Retail about $4 each.
Honestly can't say I was excited but figured maybe I'd make a buck or two.
Called all the local dealers (hey I know them all well enough;)).
    None needed them.

Key word is needed not wanted. Not like they fly off the shelves, just more clutter for them so they all passed and I would have sold for 60 cents.

I know a few casual collectors so I "sold" them to those people at my cost. Face value that is.

I hope I didn't sound like some type of snob when I said real coins but look at it this way. You can take that clutter and turn it into just a few coins that are proven. Plus, if the dealer is in a good mood they just might give you a few extra bucks on the trade.

    Good luck (whatever you decide).

Only one roll of bicentennial quarters? I won’t spell out my coin hoarding because I don’t want to embarrass myself….. As a youngster my second home was the coin shack near my home. The fellow that ran that place used to tell me… “What can be wrong with collecting money?”…… Seems I took his philosophy to heart.

At one point I had over $40 in Bicentennial quarters. Due to financial difficulties I ended up cashing then out.

Edit: changed Tahnk to Thank. I tahnk youse for unnerstannin.
