Following the four different reverse designs for the 2009 Lincoln Cents, the 2010 Lincoln Cent will feature a brand new reverse design. This design is expected to become the new permanent reverse design for the one cent coin. Under the authorizing legislation, the 2010 Lincoln Penny reverse will bear an image emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States of America as a united country. The obverse of the coin will continue to feature the portrait of Abraham Lincoln designed by Victor D. Brenner and used continuously since 1909. While the final design choice is not yet known, there have been 17 proposed designs recently provided to the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizen's Coinage Advisory Committee. Eight of the designs feature various views of the US Capitol Building. This might be a fitting choice since the fourth 2009 Lincoln Cent design features a view of the unfinished structure. Other design proposals incorporate the American Flag, a shield, and the Bald Eagle. The Commission of Fine Arts has recommended a design featuring a 34 star flag. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee has recommended a design featuring a shield. The final design choice will be made by the United States Secretary of the Treasury. A selection of some of the proposed designs appears below. Sadly LP-18 has been removed from consideration by the United States Mint.
Reverse has already been chosen check this release at the us mint http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/index.cfm?action=photo#2010LincolnPenny Richard
You are not alone Mat, I think the general census picked that one. At least most all the people I talked to picked it. Yep, there's a lot going on nowdays I'd change. We can speak our piece, but it doesn't always make any difference.
I thought the shield was already picked???http://2010lincolncents.com/2010-lincoln-cent-design-selection/
I love that eagle design in the top right, I wish that would have been it, the wheat in the lower left would have been cool, could have brought the wheat cent back in a whole new way!
The wheat was the first choice of the commitee but they went back for reconsideration when it was pointed out that there were similarities between it and the 30's Germany 2 Reichspfennig Richard
The shield, IMO is just another cheap impostor to what a real design on a coin should look like. That is what the US mint is doing, taking the beauty out of our coins and uglifying the crap out of them. I mean, we even had some nice reverses like the wheat cent, and the first Washington quarter reverse but those are long gone and will never come back. I liked the state quarter program and all, but now we are going through it all over again? With national parks? Jeez. I was hoping for a new, more empowering eagle on the 2010 quarter but oh no no, that just won't happen. The memorial cent and the first jefferson nickel reverse were okay, but I prefer them over the crap we have have circulating now. I too, like most of you, would have chosen that beautiful eagle on the upper right it is by far the best design, and I think it would just look good on our coin. Apparently beautiful designs are out of the picture though. But, I gotta hand it to the mint. The 2010 Sac looks alright, better than the 09!
Some company will have that new shield penny colorized in no time, and it will look like a red and white barber pole.
Yeah, I like the eagle too, looks similar to the eagle on the reverse of the 1986 SOL $5 gold commem. But hey, what's cool with the chosen design is now, in addition to the shield nickel, we have the shield cent.
I'm ok with the one that was chosen, it reminds me of the shield with out the eagle that was on the US minted Phillipines coins from the early 1900s. I do like the eagle and the wheat designs as well and would have been happy with any of those three. I'm really happy the memorial and flag designs weren't chosen though. Talk about ugly.
