As many know here, I have collected high grade Kennedy Half Dollars. I have the complete Dansco Album, with all the regular issue proofs. It has been posted many times. Now, I am picking up all the specialty coins. In recent weeks,I have gotten a lot of the varieties. One coin I missed was the 2014 reverse proof. Somehow, I never bothered ordering the anniversary set. So, here was my self-present—a nice PF 70 NGC.
Congrats on the pickup and the grade, Dave. I ordered four from the mint and sent 3 back due to poor quality. It was the first time I had ever sent anything back to the mint but it was obvious that the coins had been mis-handled. '70? Who'd o' thunk?
I have always loved Kennedy’s. After I get my raw Washington collection mostly done that’s my next modern project.
They are a lot of fun. The basic set is easy. I did the Dansco and sealed mint sets for that. The specialty coins are the real fun, particularly in 70 grade.
I was thinking of doing a my own set. So...the basic set plus the satin finish coins of the mid-2000s, the various recent commemorative issues (I bought the 2014 5 coin set from the mint when it was new) and the gold. I'd probably have a couple custom Caps Albums made for it.
Very nice I had been bidding on a few of those myself.. but they kept going beyond what i was will to pay... finaly managed to win the P in high relief pf70UltraCameo (same label too) Now I want the rest of the 2014 set but that darn gold half is gonna stop me hehe...
The SMS coins of the 60s, and satin finish ones of the 2000s are really cool. They are the equivalent of Morgan PL coins—they are called PL, insofar as the planchets are specially prepared to have the satiny finish, but are business strikes. The true proofs are beautiful satin finish proofs. Even though most of those coins are common, except for the 1998 matte proof, they are gorgeous in gem to ultra gem grades. Do try and buy a 1998s matte—it is not a cheap coin ($200 in 69 to $400 in 70), it is one of the most affordable of the “10 modern rarities.” It can be had in original mint packaging, uncertified for even less, as part of the set.
I have a handful of proof and uncirculated Kennedy coins . I do want the matte 1998 s finish coin. I have a few interesting clashed Kennedy coins as well . I think I will try to get as many different examples of those years as I can.
