Those are not the photographs of a 61. They have been overexposed, and edited to make the coin look better than it really is. If those pictures are accurate, the coin is outrageously undergraded. This simply do not reflect a MS 61 coin.
Sometimes a 61 is a net grade (to allow a straight grade for a coin with some issue). I had an MS 61 Morgan that had virtually no issues (looked like a 64) but at an angle there was an area with hairlines/scratches. It looked like someone tried to do something in that particular area. At most other angles, it wasn't noticeable. So it seemed like the TPG decided to give it a 61 instead of a details grade.
Just compared this one to my 63CAC NGC125411-019...and mine's a lot nicer in all respects...mine would get a 64 now, so I'll guess 62 on this one...a lot going on with this coin.
I'm no longtime expert nor always right-on...if usually in the ballpark...and while not to toot my own horn, I was indeed was right-on with this at 61, incl a possible PL and leaving room for one better grade up than down. All things considered of what I could see in photos...nothing of past or typical 1884-O strike, history, etc...I think it to be a reasonably accurate grade...no way a 63 or higher and actually to me not close enough to 63 for a 62. Am sure it looks better in-hand and glad for your good deal and that you're pleased...that's what counts.
Coin arrived yesterday , Being Prooflike it shows all the marks. To me its a 62 in hand , would be a 63 but has a few scratches that keep it from that in my opinion. For the money I paid though I am quite happy and now I own a lower grade prooflike to use to compare to. I also just picked up a 1898 AU-58 prooflike I can not wait to get. I dont know if my pictures capture the prooflike fields especially on the reverse but they are there. I am buying equipment to try and get better pictures . This was in my big picture window with outside lighting .
I think it is close there is a few decent scratches in front of her face , I figured that was the reason , though had the coin not been prooflike I do not think they would stand out so far. Possibly if it was a rarer year in prooflike it may of gotten a bump but she is common so they held it against her?
I’d want to see it in hand to see how bad some of those marks are but 63 doesn’t seem out of the question to me. 61 surprises me.
they are easy to spot but to me there not to bad , they just stand out because the surrounding stands out. Was 80 shipped including buyer fees ,so for the price I am happy
Great at $80. Most PL coins are at least $150-200 as of recent in 62-63 grades. This coin is as frosty as Canada in the Winter.
