Hello all, Im trying to learn about this nickel error. I have an uncirculated 2005 Buffalo nickel with the “D” printed with a mirror image. I’ve been unable to get any information on this error and the value. Anyone else have anything similar??
Welcome to CT. Can you post full (not thumbnails) clear pictures of obverse and reverse of the coin out of the flip? Also a closeup of the mint mark. Always take photos from directly above and crop to just the coin.
First, welcome to the neighborhood! It could be the result of a "Dropped Element". What may have happened is that the mintmark on the die became filled with grease and debris which eventually hardened after continual strikes. Finally, it fell out of the die and was struck into another planchet. If the debris remained on the planchet, it would be called a "Retained Dropped Element". Can you tell me if it is recessed or raised?
In that case, it is simply called a "Dropped Element". It isn't often that you find a "fully formed" Dropped Element whether retained or not. It's a keeper! I can't put a value on it because it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
Thank you! My mom has kept it for some time and gave it to me to hold onto. She’s always wanted to know what error it would be titled under so she will be excited to hear this. Thanks everyone for your help!
