I'm sure like many, the 21st century JFK Halves have been hard to come by as the mintage dropped significantly in 2002. Per usual, I went to the bank to get various coins and I scored...big time. The halves I pulled out included 11 halves from mint set only 1987 (P&D mixture) and 214 from 2002+ (including a 2008-S). These were all in pretty good shape. Now I'm not sure what to do with them. Keep them all and see if they become worth something in the future, sell them now to people that likely need them, or just send them back to the bank for the next collector to score on. Any thoughts and/or suggestions? Thanks
Welcome to Coin Talk. The Kennedy half issued in 1964 is what got me interested in coin collecting. Why not buy a folder (or two) and try to build a complete set. For the most part they're not that expensive. I'm saving them for my 2 y/o Grand daughter. If she keeps them, perhaps they will have some value when she's older. Edit. Save a few of each date and return the rest to circulation. That's what I do.
I kept at least 1 of each date for my collections, 2008-S (obviously), and will be keeping all 1987 as well.
Does the spam report actually work? I mean does someone/something actually do something about it? Just curious to find out. I hate Bots.
Within 15 minutes of reporting the offending posts they were deleted. The administration and moderators at Coin Talk are second to none.
The Kennedy halves were retired for circulation in 2001, so the drop in mintage numbers are collector only totals. Or very close as some may have been struck, unsold and then reclaimed. In any event, I see this as a positive move since they lost usage over the years in general, so now looking at those numbers gives a sense of how popular the series is. Which I don't see any real decline any time soon.
If you want to report them, do so, but don't reply to their post. As you can see, their post was not deleted from your comment. Now, you need to report your own post just to get a mod to delete it.
I don't usually collect Kennedy Half Dollars, but something got me interested in the 2021 Kennedy Half Dollars, so I bought a roll of 2021P & 2021 D. I haven't opened the roll. It's just interesting to know that I have them.
I have three Kennedy Silver collection albums and one up to date album. All for my two granddaughters. My hope is that one or both will continue my enthusiasm in all coin and currency collecting. Enjoyed your post, thank you.
I keep one from each date/mint and spend the rest. Sometimes I'll hand one to a 6-12 year old kid (with parents consent). I always ask them what it is and only 1 in 10 answer correctly (I know, that many?). Then if they and parents are receptive/friendly I suggest they conduct an internet search on the subject on the coin and learn about a president from the 1960's. I also give them out on Halloween instead of candy.
Thank you. I have sent spam on AOL mail and next day there are more then day prior from same Bots. I just had my doubts.
