    Hiya everyone,

So I received my 2009 uncirculated coin set for both D and P in the mail today, I have to say, I was utterly disappointed. While my silver proof was (in my opinion) fantastic, my D and P sets were either covered in scratches, had dents, or had the coin view tuned 90% from the others that lined up. Such a shame.

Is it like this for the other annual years?

I hate to hear that, I have some older mint sets, they are good, but i really prefer proof sets and coins, the quality is no comparison

I believe mint set are composed of coins struck for circulation.
I don't think there's any special effort by the Mint to handpick better coins.

I totally understand what you mean Ponderossa. For the past 4 months, I've purchased a lot of the proof sets from the different years, I couldn't care about the silver content, I just love how the different greys collide with each other. But now I'm picking up uncirculated sets as I one day want to have all of them to pass onto my unborn children (LoL, doing it now while I have my toy money to myself).

I guess it was wrong of me to automatically assume that just cause its from the Mint that it would be in great quality, but of course I wouldn't mind if they were actual errors. Ah well, better luck next year.

I see what you mean Kanga, it appears I just paid so much for the nice little package it comes in.

....actually, mint sets are made for collectors. THEY SHOULD BE GOOD QUALITY!

can you imagine buying a new car that looked like crap? are cars not made for circulation

AND customers? it's ridiculous how the quality has tanked at the mint over the years.

2009 mint & proof set were the largest ever made. I think one of the worst made too:eek:

Ever read Consumer Reports car reviews and see the number of defects they find on the cars they are getting ready to test? Sometimes they are bad enough they have to have the cars repaired before they are able to start testing them.

I agree with the majority of responses in saying that I too was highly dissappointed with the 2009 Mint Set and mine as well had many nicks in them :(

The biggest problem with the mint putting out poor quality is us as collectors and them being the only game in town.

Frequently I read here of collectors buying something new from the mint even if they don't like it, but buy it just because. Many buy mint and proof sets yearly for collection purposes, having to accept whatever the mint puts out. I would have to say the return rate on these is probably quite low, at this time I think our expectations are not that high.

I certainly don't have an answer to the problem except management maybe needs to look at collectors in a more favorable way. I guess it would help if a coin collector was in charge of collector type coins. But they don't have to do much of anything, like I said they are the only game in town.

It's not like they pick coins out of the bin of regular bussiness strikes ready to be shipped off N. F. String and son. They should be better quality. If you are unhappy you shoud send them back and hope for a better set in return.

I've often wondered what kind of a percentage they have on returns. I'm also curious if the one sent after the original is returned is really any better than the original.

I've also read here the ones that are returned are just simply sent out to someone else.

I don't know, but I think it would be worth a try if the set is that bad.

I totally agree with you. That is probably the only was to improve quality is for them to have a very high return rate. And, you never know one might get lucky and get a better one.

Okay, I'm gonna return them for a refund. Oh my set was bad, when looking to admire them, my eyes kept glancing at the damaged coins, rather annoying, LoL.

I do want this set, but was hesitant on sending them back as I wasn't sure if I should expect the same back. I'm still split on what to expect, however thanks to everyone's posts, I'll give it one more try. If I get back another substandard issue back again I'll probably just keep it.

...it's amazing the incompetence we are supposed to accept and just move on.
absolutely ridiculous! pride has disappeared in many companies and corporations.
    truly a shame.

I kind of take the mint sets and flow with it. I was fortunate enough to have found one with the satin double thumb and another with the sixth finger as shown in Wexlers list. You may want to look closer before sending them back. You may have a Gem of a coin sitting there.

That's the first satin skeleton finger I've heard of. Nice.

It is a problem my heirs will have to sort out. Let them worry about the value. But it is not the skeleton finger...more like a second index finger over the binding of the book.
