Years ago, I bought a couple of 1972 Lincoln rolls that I just opened up today, and I think I kind of hit the jackpot with them. Over half of them show some doubling, though minor compared to four of them. I still have about 15 to go through and I've already found 4 different DDO's. One CC1DO-011 (copper coins), one DDO-006 (FS106), one FS109, and now what I think must be a FS-108. The letters and digits are broad, I think due to the doubling. I'm hoping some experienced eyes will confirm the FS-108 for me:
These rolls must have been from a dealer that was saving possible doubles. Just found another (Looks like FS-102):
Yes!! Jackpot!! It would be unusual to find multiple, different DDOs in the same roll/bag, but I like your theory that someone knew to consolidate DDOs for attribution later. I see CW and CCW doubling. There are several to check out, but it's a fun task when you have so many!!
(My Reference 001) Okay - I find this one interesting. I'm not sure if the date is doubled, but if so it's not listed. There is obvious doubling elsewhere on the coin as is the case with most of them in the rolls. The notches in LIBERTY are strong, especially the B as well as the D in GOD. Any thoughts as to classification? Do you think the date is doubled?
Die deterioration doubling, some of the devices have it on both sides and there are some distinct radial flow lines. Sure signs of a die nearing it's end
Actually quite common in BU rolls to get multiple of the same die since the mint bags up whatever dies are in use that day together. I got a collection dump of BU state quarters at my local bank not too long ago and got about 15 of the same doubled earlobe variety.
This happens often with RPMs where I've found a bunch of the same RPM...but also a mix of other RPMs. But usually no more than 3 different varieties. It happens, but with multiple DDOs from different dies, I have to think it was a cherrypicked roll intended to be attributed at some future point. Fun to snatch up when available!
This looks like the Master Die Doubling that occurred in 1972. It appears on P, D, and S mint specimens as it traces back to the Master Hub. It's true doubling, but it appears on over 50% of all 1972 cents minted. So it is rendered a moot point as a result, and no premium attached. It is most notable in the Ts of IGWT, but the D in GOD has that notch. That said, there are other DDOs that have a similar effect, but different. Take a second look and see what you think with the coin in hand.
