Almoravids Ali ibn Yusuf with heir Sir.jpg
Almoravids of North Africa and Spain, Ali ibn Yusuf with heir Sir, AR Quirate, 522-533 AH, 1128-1139 AD, 0.95g

Quirate derives from the Greek kerátion, "algarrobo", since its weight equals that of the seed of this tree (carob tree). The word carat (as in 1 carat diamond) comes from the same Greek root.

The control mark on your example would have to be a backward B (which I doubt) or a retrograde R. I think!

Hi @Bing, I think it is a backward B - Crawford describes the options as: "The control marks are the letters of the Latin alphabet as far as S, normally disposed or reversed, alone or accompanied by one or two dots". Here's an R example.
