Hi everyone! I've been away for most of the past year while I learned my new job (in a completely different industry), but now that I have settled in a bit, I have some more time to come back and read and post on CT. That said, have any of you ever seen one of these? When I was a kid, they had a few at the coin shop, but I had not seen a single one since. Truthfully, I thought it was my mind playing tricks with my memory, but when I saw this one, I immediately bought it. I am really happy to have found one, and a Peace Dollar (my personal favorite design) to boot! Does this have a name? Do any of you have one?
Welcome back! I've never seen one. Is it some sort of overlay? That's quite an expression on her face. She looks like she just sniffed some spoiled milk.
Craftspeople use a tiny drill bit and a rattail file or coping saw to cut out the silhouettes on the coins to make jewelry. They melt or sell the scrap silver for extra profit. The first time I saw this performed was at an arts & crafts show in Chincoteague, VA in the early 70's. You can still find many examples of this art on the internet under "coin jewelry".
Seriously??? I’ve never heard of this… tell me more Agreed. These are agregious. This coin will likely be reholdered
It looks like a cameo proof and there are no Peace Dollar proofs (cameo or otherwise). I guess it's just an optical illusion.
I remember seeing those when I was a kid, probably in some airport gift shop or something. That was the 1970's! I also remember the somewhat clumsy attempt I performed to manufacture something similar. It didn't turn out well and rubbish binned.
In my younger years, I've broken many a jeweler's saw blades doing the sail boat on the Canadian coin. LOL
At the Ventura County Fair every year, there is a jewelry stall that does these...I don't know if they would do a coin you brought them, but they might.
