1996 Quarter Error

    Yes, someone damaged it after it left the mint. Looks like another coin was pressed into it.

    As stated, another coin was placed above the other and pressed together with considerable force.

    Yes, it is PMD! You can tell because the reverse has been totally obliterated from being pressed against a flat surface. If it were done at the Mint, you would expect to see the imprint of the reverse die.

    If you think about the minting process, you can easily see that your coin would not have fit in the collar of the press so not a error from the mint, but PMD.

    I'd say it was a vice job, done with a vise, or perhaps some one could devise a way to do it with a different device.
