Real life, however, can be stranger than fiction." Excavated a dozen years ago at the Givati parking lot in Jerusalem Portrait of Heraclius Heracles ruled the East Roman Empire from 610 to 641 BCE [sic... supposed to be AD, isn't it?] None of the coins are clipped, carry graffiti, or have any other significant signs of use Likely part of an emergency issue struck at a Jerusalem mint,
Ms. Bijovsky is an Israeli archaeologist specializing in numismatics. I became familiar with her work some years ago through my interest in early Islamic coppers. You can find her report on the gold hoard here: https://antiquities.academia.edu/GabrielaIngridBijovsky
Thanks! Much can be learned when reading professional papers. I shall read it. Nevertheless, before reading the link, I'll remain extremely suspicious. I respect the work of all the professionals involved with the hoard; but I doubt anyone has had this entire hoard closely examined under high magnification by professional coin authenticators. I'll note that AFAIK that was never done with the "Black Sea Hoard" that was authenticated by a bunch of professional ancient coin dealers. IMHO, if they would have sent that group to a few "professionals" who will not be named here, a lot of money could have been saved.
Well if they are all fakes... whoever made them just wasted $65,000 in gold to make 264 solid gold coins, (which will likely never end up for sale) (0% chance they are fakes)

Remember, I have not condemned the hoard as fakes. I said I AM SUSPICIOUS of things like this. IT IS IN MY NATURE. You make an excellent point IF they are never sold. Until I read the link, I won't know if those unlisted coins were dug out of an undisturbed pit of rock-hard-earth that was witnessed by a dozen diggers. Get my point?
