Still, you have to admit it doesn't look good when a guy talks about all the problems with a coin on one forum and then turns around to sell it elsewhere with only the slightest mention. I don't really think BNB meant anything shady and its really too bad that it comes across that way.

With regards to the coin: I don't feel bad at all about his disappointment in it. Everyone runs into that sometimes and BNB's doing precisely the right thing by selling it.

That is exactly the point I was trying to make. And I agree that BNB really doesn't have the knowledge to say that the coin looks different in hand. I have purchased hundreds of coins from Heritage and never have I gotten one where the photo was way off base from reality.

Essentially what you guys are saying is that if I decide to sell my MS68 Morgan Dollar, I can't ethically show the potential buyer the Heritage photo. It is the same scenario, the Heritage photo floods the coin with light which shows the color but the overall appearance of the coin in hand is slightly different. The coin itself is brutally difficult to photograph.

My photo shows the overall appearance of the coin better but does not display all of the color. Are you guys saying I can't show the Heritage photo because it would be misleading?

In BNB's situation, he is selling the coin sight unseen, the buyer knows this. As long as BNB accepts returns, I see no ethical dilemma.

    Still seems wrong to me.
You don't just talk about the problems of the coin on Cointalk, then go over to CU, with the photos that make the coin look better, and mention the problems slightly! (Which is basically what Ardatirion stated)

Do I agree that he should sell the coin if he wants? Yes
But I also think that he needs to either show his photos, and heritage's photos, and describe it to the best of his ability and offer a return, or he needs to get somebody to professional photograph it.

Nope not saying that at all, I'm saying if one picture doesn't show what the other does, I'd say use both photos, and describe to the best of your ability and offer a return. (Which I cannot say anything about, in BNB's situation, as he gave no information on his return policy)

It looks bad Travis, but in all honesty, there are no real problems with the coin. All of the things that BNB finds problematic with the coin are typical of a 3-legged Buffalo and Heritage photos. The photos don't show the die erosion well and BNB never heard of die erosion so of course he was surprised when he saw it. However, and experienced buyer would expect that and not be bothered by it at all. BNB is making a mountain out of a mole hill IMO. However, he was expecting perfection and the coin in hand just couldn't measure up to his expectations. If he is not happy with the coin, he should sell it.

BNB has almost no experience buying coins sight unseen from Heritage photos and chooses the 3-legged Buffalo as his debut. Kinda like going from high school straight to the NBA if you ask me and he ain't Kobe Bryant. I even warned him when he first joined this site that I have been searching for an eye appealing 3-legger for at least two years. Well the search continues, and BNB has now learned the hard way why my search continues.

His slinking over to CU had much more to do with avoiding the onslaught that was inevitable on this forum.

Alright, I'll chill and let things cool down. I'll let BNB sell this coin all by himself with his descriptions of the coin being "a bit different"

I think I might be too...he hasn't responded to me for quite some time. Don't know what I did though.

I completely agree. He bought it and it is his right to do what he wants with it. If he doesn't like it, then sell it. However, he has said himself that the HA photos are not what the coin looks like in hand and he was disappointed by it once he got it in hand:

So, IMHO it is misleading to use those photos. When you know and have stated that they are inaccurately representing the coin and you use them in the sale...that is immoral and there is no way justify it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this coin. I think it is a nice example of the variety and it could very easily be sold honestly. But, even nice coins can be misrepresented and to knowingly do so is wrong.

Yes, it's past time you did just that and there are others that need to get past what ever problems they may have with BNB as well.

I find some of you on this forum truly appalling and downright insulting towards me and who I am as a person(my character). It just never stops.. Some of you people are just as guilty as rushing to judgement as you claim I am.. I never intended to sell the coin on Collector's Universe. I was TEST selling it to see how it would sell. Read the writing CAREFULLY. I said I would CONSIDER OFFERS on it. That does not mean I am all out selling it to the first guy who comes my way.. Sure if somebody offers me $1800(because who won't turn down a nice profit instantly for a coin that doesn't look exactly like the picture) I'll probably bite, but I just want to see if this coin has the power to resell based off the power it had on me when I originally pulled the trigger. This is completely opposite than trying to sell a coin based on good pictures with little description, because in the end, I probably wasn't going to sell the coin, and just say I did, I would tell the buyer more about the coin and the story I had when buying it and send them the appropriate pictures if they requested them.

First off, this was something I did for my own learning purposes and I wanted to see if the public had genuine interest in this coin and see how they responded to the Heritage pictures. The coin is still a great coin and I want to own it but it takes a few bad apples here to totally change the frame work of the situation to make it look like I am doing something bad. Shame on you, one's who are doing that.. Shame, shame, Shame!

I'm truly shocked and sadly disappointed at some of you, especially near the Eve of Christmas.

Lesson to be learned with this: Don't rush to judgement and use gang mentality to put down another individual when you don't know what his real motives behind the listing were. I'm truly and utterly disappointed here, guys.

PS: I'm shocked also by how many supportive & positive PM's come in from new members and old every day who support me whole heartedly through this abuse I often get on this forum. They encourage me to leave and go somewhere else, but I don't. Sadly to have people PMing me in such volume goes to show that the outter lurkers here think very lowly of the practices some of you exude towards other members. Good way to scare off new people to Coin Talk in my opinion. Good job guys. (Peter I hope you see this) So my advice to you negative abusive posters on here, stop. It's just my advice, because I can't tell you how many PM's I've received so far bashing you bashers(tmoney, krispy, stainless, still the same troup). Upwards of 20+ PM's thus far..

If he is expecting perfection, he ought to do two things; #1 don't collect coins, #2 don't buy an AU coin. It says right on the holder that it's not perfect!

First of all I gotta say that you guys are all better than this - or at least I thought you were. Maybe you're not. And while there was only 1 thing that went over the line and broke the rules - I'm sure not proud of the rest of ya.

And BNB, one of these days you need to take a good look in the mirror because you bring a whole lot this on yourself. No I'm not pointing fingers or putting you down. But man - you do bring it on yourself. If you tee one up there - somebody is going to hit it.

Still, that is not an excuse for the behavior of some and I in no way condone it. But it is fact of life that if anyone does something that members of this forum find in the least way unethical - then person doing it is going to be crucified. Of course when it's some seller on ebay that is not a member here, nobody tends to get too upset about it. There may one or two who will post a comment about not being so quick to judge. But for the most part folks jump on the bandwagon.

Well that's OK I guess. People have a right to express their opinions, Lord knows I express mine often enough. And I am as guilty as anyone when it comes to not pulling punches and calling a spade a spade. Comments of mine about companies like ACG come to mind. Or some dealers whose habits are such that I wouldn't spit in their mouths if they were dying of thirst.

So I guess I will close with the old adage - judge not lest ye be judged. You might want to keep that in mind.

His expectations are a direct result of his limited knowledge and experience. Something that will cure itself in time as long as he is not driven away from numismatics entirely by the negativity that seems to follow him. Furthermore, he was probably speaking in a relative manner and his exclamation of perfection was in reference to an AU coin. It was meant to imply that his coin is as good as an AU coin can get, not that is was a perfect MS70 coin.

BTW, you never did tell us what the biggest scam in numismatics is?

I still can't really see the line you are talking about...but I don't see any damage or anything in that area. Does it run through all the features of the coin? What I mean is, does it run across the fields and the devices? If so, it was probably some kind of a metal flaw in the alloy. Perhaps the metal wasn't completely mixed on the planchet and the coin was struck. I can see die erosion elsewhere on the coin, but I don't see it where your pictures had indicated the line is.

It's so hard because I have nothing but lamps emitting light in my room so I have no overhead lighting.. Let me go outside in the snow to take some photos. It's daylight.

I never said that 3-leggers were a scam, just overvalued like the 1844 dime. The biggest scam in numismatics is encapsulation. Toning is bad for the hobby in the long run, but people genuinely like it so it's not a scam, just a bad, bad thing.

    I agree.

I also agree with vice versa.

Sheesh, guys, everybody oughtta lighten up.

Yep. And, Lehigh, you're making a point that almost no one else is picking up on. *NONE OF US HAVE SEEN THE COIN IN HAND* -- and yet too many here have no hesitation making the worst of judgments on it.

I sure hope we're not saying that: "if Heritage does it, it's OK; but when a rash over-enthusiastic under-experienced 24yo does it, it's unethical."

As I've written many times before . . . assuming the worst in others actions is not only wrong (in my book), but leads to high blood pressure (metaphorically speaking), and a life that's not quite as fun. Let's ask before we assume we know everything and point fingers. Chilling out and giving the benefit of the doubt leads to a happier life. IMHO.
