Oh how I have loved the roll...to rephrase that great song by the great Willie Nelson. Basically have searched pennies (for wheats and Canadians) and half-dollars (for silver that was never found.) I inherited about 80 quarters from a dear friend, including states and National Parks. There are some presidential dollars as well. I'd like to fill up some Whitman Folders--a sentimental journey, each coin placed will recall good memories. This would be a very long term project, something to work on occasionally, always having a few rolls ready for the late quiet hours. Is this at all workable? And do banks even have dollar rolls that would have the presidents? I thank you in advance. My other projects now are EACS culls, learning about Roman Emperors, and those awesome Large Canadian Coppers. My bank will order in small dollars and 1/2 dollars for me but it is expensive! Doubt all banks will be that nice but you can try to find one! I think the minimum order for my bank is $2,000! The dollar rolls I get contain Susan B. Anthony, Native American, Sacagawea, and Presidential dollars!
Thanks guys for the responses. I know my bank will let me buy 100. in pennies, but I'm always careful to return these to a different bank. It will be interesting to see what they will do regarding the quarters and the dollar coins. I was thinking that they might let me get 10 rolls of quarters and 5 of dollars, but maybe that's not feasible.
Don't return what you search to the same bank. Bad form and also bigger chance you will get the coins you already searched back. I've been told that quarters and dimes are in short supply right now, just FYI. If you aren't getting a full box of whatever denomination, they will have to store the rest of that box in their vault which may not have much room.
Don't neglect giving thought to your dump banks. Back when we used to search the banks had counting machines we could dump in. But in time unless they're real slow they're going to figure out your game and stop it. The best way to dump these days is to dump into an account and get a deposit ticket for it rather than to just cash off. But just remember you're going to need that back end carefully thought out, too, or things are just going to pile up on the front end.
I agree not to return coins to the same bank you buy from!! Just in case I always put an X on the wrappers. That way if I do go back to buy I can ID the rolls I have already looked at!
Curious, when you guys say "same bank," do you mean the exact same branch? Like if I got coins from one Wells Fargo, and returned them to a different Wells, would that be OK? Or should I be returning them to a different bank chain altogether?
The same Wells Fargo in the same area probably is supplied by the same company (Loomis/Garda/Brinks). I dump my coins at a bank that uses Garda and I pick up from a bank that uses Loomis. All the branches in the area use the same companies.
Small dollars are usually easy to buy from the tellers, They generally have them in those plastic coin holders at their windows, and are positively GIDDY to get rid of them! You can usually get $20 to $30 of them from a teller. Also ask at your local 7/11 or other small store. They also hate dealing with them,but get them from time to time. A $2000 dollar box is overkill and then you have to dump them. $20 to $30 is much more manageable. Let them know you are looking for them and they will probably be glad to let you knw when they get some.
In my experience, small dollars can be found at most teller windows. They always have a few. Then, every so often, they will have a few hundred or more in the vault. Original bank rolls and even mint rolls. Someone decided to get rid of a collection and found out the dollar rolls are not sought after my many people. The dumping of them after picking is the main issue. I am lucky, as I have found a bank that has a counter and does not mind me bringing them in. From my reading on this site and others, that is a rare occurrence. And Beardigger's experiences are comparable to mine. Good luck.
if your bank will let you buy $100 in pennies, 4 boxes, then I'd think they will let you buy whatever you want if they set the bar that high on cents. Some banks just won't do halves or small dollars for whatever their reason, you can ask but if they say no, smile and say thank you and move on to what they will do for you and leave it be. as far as halves and small dollars, generally banks are happy to get rid of them even if they won't order them for you, so it doesn't hurt to stop randomly to banks if they don't look busy and ask if they have any. they don't really fit the tills and they end up having to count them day after day when people turn some in so most banks have $10-$100 laying around they are tired of counting every day. not idea if you are in a hurry, but if you have a lifetime to achieve the goal it will work. if that's not working out, some of the public transportation places give change in small dollars on their machine, or the post office stamp machine if they have one. Banks near a location like this can be fruitful on a regular basis as people want the paper bills instead.
