Yes, I know they're graded coins and they're MS70's, that's a fact! What I'm saying by calling it a gimmick is I don't really care if it's MS70 or MS67, it's still an ounce of silver to me and I won't pay extra money for a higher graded bullion coin. If you all like MS70's, go for it, it's your money! :D

My son (now 50 Y/O) would collect a box of baseball cards each year (as well as comic books). He is more anal than I am about our collections. He started collecting when he was 12 (1973). Each year when he got his baseball cards, he would get all of the cards for the Atlanta Braves and take them to a neighborhood friend that played for the Braves. He did it for three years until he was told that they couldn't do it any more. All of those cards were put in card holders to protect them. He also collected Marvel comic books that he bought from the store he worked at. They, too, are well protected. Over the years he sold some of the cards to pay his tuition at UNC-CH. He now owns to beach houses (paid for) and 3 of his children are at BYU. I am or was a CPA and I must have taught him something.
I talked to him about the proforma autographs and he said the real collectors of autographs can be detected. The companies that sell things with autographs and pays the individuals well. However, proforma signatures are like Chinese coins and if detected... buyers beware. If the signers don't have a contract, and even if they are dead. the company selling proforma signatures on items that they sell will be legally label for fraud and anything else a lawyer wants to do.

So how does that in anyway shape or form fit an actual definition of a gimmick?

That's not a signature slab. Theres some special label there with a license to use the name that most do, the signatures will be a real signature not the same font on the label typed out.

Fair enough, it's not a "gimmick" in the true definition of the word! ;) I just don't buy any of the fancy labels, I buy the coin not the slab and not the label. thumbupp.gif

So what definition of the word then is it a "gimmick"?

    Ok?

IMHO, ANY signed slab is just a form of TPG’s finding another way of separating you from your $$$. I buy the COIN not the “alleged” signature.

Your right when I was a kid baseball was king. We spent our summers playing baseball at a local city field. The 1960's was great for playing baseball and collecting coins. We would still get buffalo nickels and Mercury dimes in change. I even remember spending a walking liberty half dollar at a department store.

I had a Steve Carton signed HOF half dollar that I gave to my grandson. Looks like live ink.
The only other autographs I have are mostly boxing, some cards, some gloves.

I'm somewhat familiar with Red Schoendienst's career, particularly as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals . . . and I'm struggling mightily to figure out what possible connection there might be between Red and a 2020 silver eagle. Any guesses?

Based upon the photo posted by the OP, I'd say the question is moot as it doesn't show ANY signature at all!

Signed PCGS slabs are signed in the back side of the insert. He only posted the front side.

It would seem to me that any sale and such of items like this should require a total positive disclosure by the seller(s)...UP FRONT...and clearly visible/unmistakable no matter the how/when it was done, et al. In other words, if a seller doesn't know for sure the provenance details of the signature when/before they took ownership, they must state that as well...not just leave it out for later, as if "I didn't know." Also, there's some self-responsibility involved here, also...no criticism intended...to ask questions and be sure of what one is buying before-hand. Just simple common sense.

The autograph is authentic. If you do a little
Google searching you will find these are for sale all over the place. The autographs are a little different on each one so they aren’t preprinted. MLB hall of famer autographs are also pretty common on PCGS ASE slabs. Also remember, Collectors Universe has a sports memorabilia (PSA) and and autograph (DNA) services. So this shouldn’t be a surprise.
