Some things just didn't happen this year that people thought the mint would have done... well some were already announced last year to be called off, but in case you missed it: The Lincoln silver dollar and 4 Lincoln cent set: not happening. This was only ever rumored, but it's not going to be made. Feel free to buy them separately. The Lincoln cents in their original copper composition: Not going to be released individually (well technically you can get the proofs of the Lincoln cents individually, and they're copper). The Lincoln cents in proof sets and unicrculated sets are in their original copper composition though. American Silver Eagles: No proofs or uncirculated this year, just the bullion versions. Same with American Gold Eagles. No uncirculated American Platinum Eagles, but there will be proofs of the Platinum Eagles. (American Gold Buffaloes are still avaiable in proof this year, but not uncirculated.) Fractional (1/10 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz) of American Gold Eagles, American Platinum Eagles, and American Buffaloes are discontinued, probably indefinitely. (Means for the Buffaloes that 2008 was the only year they were ever released in fractionals). Probably not "news" to many of you, but in cased you missed it, there you are. BTW if you want to get the Ultra High Relief Double Eagle coin, you only got about a week left to get it from the mint! http://www.usmint.gov
Well you got everything right...... Except this; I'm pretty sure that set was indeed released. The 5 coin Lincoln Chronicles set.
Hmm, must have missed that one. Never saw it for sale on the Mint's website. But I admit I wasn't looking too hard, after I already got the Lincoln silver dollar... and the Lincoln cents separately, getting this would be redundant for me anyway. Oh well. Thanks for catching that one. Did it sell out quickly? Don't recall ever seeing the selling window on the mint's website.
What is kind of amazing is that with all those products that didn't get made, there was still a ton of things to choose from.
By mint order numbers it sold out in about 6 hours, but the mint kept it on sale. After 24 hours they continued selling them but told people they would be on a waiting list. After another 48 hours they announced the sell out and stopped selling them. What surprises me is we haven't heard a lot of angry complaints about cancelled orders. With that kind of sales history I would have expected a landslide of complaints.
Yes -- apparently a number of people did. I was able to get three and was able to re-sell them each on eBay at well more than double the price. (I just don't really have an interest in proof sets). Just now, I took a quick look, and they seem to be still going for $120-$130 or so.
