i have a coin i dont know what it is its the size of a silver dollar the color of a penny on the front it says georgivs v dei gra:brittmn:rex fid:def:ind:imp and on the back it says one penny and 1916 and has wat looks like a roman man with a three pronged speer
It sounds to me like you have a British Penny. The "man" with the trident is actually a woman, Britannia. It's from during the reign of George VI, the ruler over Great Britain before Queen Elizabeth. Nice find! Pics would be wonderful if you have them.
If you take a look on ebay you can get an idea what they go for. Otherwise post a pic and someone can give you a guess. :hail:
Its a King George V Penny. £15 in EF or £50 in UNC, according to Spink. If you plan on selling it, I'd try to coincide it with a trip to Britain, because unless the American dealer is big on British coins, he probably won't pay you more than peanuts for it...
Unfortunatley it really hasn't a value below UK VF (about £3.00) which borders on US XF There were 47,318,807 minted. You will probably note the shadow of King Georges head on the reverse. This is Known as ghosting (the bronze mix wasn't up to it)
translation And the translation, part of it abbreviated, is roughly George V by grace of god king of Britain, defender of the faith, emperor of India.
That's no man baby! Does it look something like this? This is an earlier version with Queen Victoria on the reverse instead of King George. Welcome to Coin Talk.
Oh yeah, sorry. I forgot this. That is right except he was 'King of all the Britons' (a reference to the colonies of the Empire)...
