I had a close call to losing my collection today. Our house was broken into by some idiots who ended up stealing our Christmas presents and my laptop. Fortunately, they did not notice the two Silver Eagles and Maple Leafs, the Dansco Albums, the coin box, the Lincoln Chronicles. Everything, was in place.

The bad news is that just when we thought our Christmas shopping was done, we get to start all over again. Also, it's going to cost an arm and a leg to fix the door they kicked in.

I have to say, having an alarm was a good thing. It didn't prevent them from breaking in, but they didn't have a lot of time. The police made it to the scene within 15 minutes. Very nice police officers. I showed them my coin collection and one said, "they didn't know what they were doing", referring to the crooks. The other looked at me and said, "you need to lock those up". I told him, yes I do

I have them hidden in the house now, but I am going to have to investigate the best way to secure my coins, whether it be an insurance policy, a safe or a safe deposit box. There are options to consider, but I definitely will have to do something. This is the second time in 2 1/2 years that we were burglarized. Last time, the police actually caught the people and we were able to watch them get cuffed and put in the police car. This time, I'm afraid the bad guys got away.

Coin insurance is extremely expensive. If you can't get a deal from someone you know, or unless you're a dealer with everything in your coins, I don't recommend it.

There are lots of previous threads on the relative merits of safe deposit box vs. safe.

In my opinion, the best protection is stealth -- nobody can steal that which they do not know exists.

Thank goodness you didn't loose your collection but what a terrible thing to have happened to your home at the holidays. Be safe and have a happy Christmas.

Sorry about the burglery. Glad no one was injured. I believe the ANA still offers a nice deal on insurance. You might want to check their website.

Recently I read an article online, I think from the NY times that said crime has not increased in spite of the recession. However, that is not the case where I live. The police that came to my house told me that burglaries are really bad right now. I guess they usually see an uptick during Christmas, but this year it's really bad. I think that's one reason they were able to respond so quickly to my house. They have been making frequent patrols due to the increased crime.

I don't know if I would blame burglaries on the recession unless there has been a cutback in the police department. I don't know really.... I guess if there are houses to burglarize, there will always be people willing to do the job. :smile

That's the pitts!! good luck with your shopping! Tomorrow and the next day is all you have and Thursday will be the mad dash. You really don't want to get caught up in that. I hide my stuff as well and yes, I have to put some stuff in a safe deposit box too.

Sorry about your break in. My sis lives in KC on the Missouri side. I recommend the Hugh Woods insurance. I have it and it is not as expensive as one may think. It is all relative to the value of your collection. Good that you had an alarm system. THat is also a must if you keep your collection at home.

Good thing you have a working alarm system!!!
I'd also suggest a big guard dog. My dog is an Australian Sheppard, very big, very protective of his home, he scares people that ring our door bell, every time, you should see all the marks on our door from him!
You need to have your coins in a secure place, leaving them out in broad daylight might cause some problems LOL
I'm sorry that you have to re-do your Christmas shopping, but I am very glad that you and your family are safe now.

What is up with all the robberies of the CT members??? Some kinda conspiracy against is going on.

Yeah, my wife and I were discussing that. We have a Wheaten Terrier right now, who is definitely not very fearsome. Everyone is her friend. I told my wife that our next dog will be a German Shepherd.

I like German Shepherds and had one when I was a kid. They are so smart and very protective of their family. I know they require a lot of exercise and that they shed, but still they are good dogs. Nobody, is going to want to come into a house with a dog barking and growling.

German shepherds are great dogs....very smart and protecting usually good with kids too....I had a Rottweiler until about 2 years ago...she was the nicest dog....wouldn't hurt a soul...but man her bark was somethin else...no one would think about coming near my house....now I have a shepherd mix from the pound...very smart...

With a little work go buy a large gun safe, add shelves inside, then ... most of all ... drill holes through the bottom and put huge industrial bolt through the safe to a large metal plate underneath the floor. They would need a forklift or some large piece of machinery to rip it out. Total cost probably around 800-1000 dollars. Very good investment.
