    Hi everyone,

A coworker has approached me with the following coin after finding out I am a collector:
    E724328E-0C63-4DC3-B158-4161B0188DFD.jpeg EFDB2AC3-97FB-4D76-8374-10A6C9A046DE.jpeg
He believes this coin is very rare, quoting this article on Etsy about a similar coin worth 20 thousand dollars. This is the article:
    https://www.etsy.com/listing/885183...Graph&utm_medium=PageTools&utm_campaign=Share

After doing a quick search I couldn’t find anything to tell me that his coin was indeed rare or identical to the coin supposedly worth 20k. On the price guide at PCGS.com I found one with a high auction record of 26k. This is the coin link below:

    https://www.pcgs.com/auctionprices/item/1964-d-50c/6707/2176709371730767830

After telling him there’s nothing special about the coin, he insisted that it is indeed the one worth 20k. I told my coworker I would look into it on the forum and ask some experts. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

    Thank you all for looking,
    Larry

Tell him ETSY is a scam none of those coins are worth that much. His 1964 half dollar has 10 dollars of silver in it. That is all it is worth.

The Kennedy Half shown in the photo is worth little more than melt ($10.11) as of this moment. IMO it's not even MS (Mint State). Go on eBay and check the sold listings for 1964 JFK Halves and show the prices to your friend. Explain to him why the 64 D sold for that price. (MS 68, toning, pedigree) and mostly people who have registry sets will pay those high prices. If there's a few coin shops in your area tell him to see what they offer.

It's the age old problem of a little information without understanding the context. I see it ALL THE TIME when people look up a coin in a price guide without understanding that it is a price for straight grade coins with no problems.

If they understand at all, they think the problems should only be discounted by a few percent when the market is far harsher.

Then they look at asking prices for people selling on eBay who are in the same boat or just looking for a passing sucker and think it's verification.

There is little awareness that condition affects the value of a coin even more than grade. There are no rules of thumb on pricing here. A details XF can net to a market grade for a problem free VF or F or VG or G or AG or Fr or even P depending on the problem(s).

But trying to explain this, even to some in the business, becomes exhausting. Especially when they think you're trying to rip them off.

@Swervo513 …your co-worker is delusional. You told him correctly. The silver Kennedy half has evidence of handling…read that: circulated. Neither his coin nor the Etsy one come anywhere close to the PCGS coin.

IIRC…the accented hair type Kennedy is a proof, the Etsy is not, and your co-workers’ coin is not.

The best you can do is what you did…tell him the truth, and then it’s up to him after that…er,…he’s not your boss, is he?

    You lost me at Etsy.

Tell your coworker that trusting Etsy for numismatic knowledge is like trusting Bernie Madoff for investment advice.

The coin in the photo isn't even an accented hair. If it was it would have a missing serif on the I in Liberty.
Frickin ETSY, They are nothing but ignorant on that site. I honestly think they are nothing but scammers and fools.

All you can do is be honest with your coworker. Give them all the facts. Just remember that only they can change their mind. Maintain the friendship and one day the truth will hit him.

This guy is trying to sell this for $20,000.00. Tell your coworker to be as ridiculous as he is. Make him a counteroffer of $0.75.

It is a common coin. The 1964 Kennedy halves are common, and have been hoarded in large quantities. That particular coin has plenty of circulation, and is rather ugly. It is worth melt value.

Thank you everyone! I had to show him proof that experts are saying the same thing. He’s not my boss thank goodness hahaha. I appreciate the time you took out to answer.

I can see the blank stare now. Who's Bernie Madoff?

Those who do not learn History are doomed to repeat it. And they aren't even trying now.

Etsy is full of scams. Anyone being realistic can spend 10 minutes on there looking at coins and understand its just full of delusional people hoping to rip off someone with too much money and uninformed, the perfect sucker.

If he thinks it's worth 20K, tell him to go get that money and sell it and he'll figure it out right quick what it's worth.

Nothing surprises me anymore. - Edited - not hard to understand why people think Etsy coin sales has something to do with reality.
