I said in the OP that they are missing variety II. Its a Canada penny lol. I am almost positive that the 1877 is genuine. As I said in the post with the picture attached, the bottom right of the N in “ONE” and the top left of the N in “CENT” is less prominent. Its possible that they have been cleaned though.

Canadian I think (1937-1947). British has D:G:BR:OMN:REX etc. Funny that it's in there.

My other suspicion is based on their grades. The 08 S looks like a way better grade than the 08 and 09. Same with the 09 S way better condition than rhe 08 no mm or 09. The 77 as well. Could be the pictures. Tell the family that 90 percent of the value is in those 3 coins, and while you think they are real, they are known to be heavily counterfeited.

The reason that is suspicious is usually it is the opposite, rhe common dates are in better condition than the key dates and most often by a lot...

When I was a kid, I got the 1873 open and closed 3 cents for my album, which didn’t have openings for both coins. I put the extra coin it the 1856 Flying Eagle hole, which I was never going to fill.

The 1886 cents are surprisingly tough in the better circulated grades. I didn’t get both of them when I was a kid, and the one I did have was only a VG when I my usual goal was to get all of the coins in Fine or better.

The more I look at the pictures of the 1877 and the 1909-S, the more leery I become. I have seen Chinese counterfeits with that type of toning. I would be careful if you are intending to spend some money on it.

From the tests I did, they are genuine. I returned it to them and said they should get those two graded to be sure. Even if they were for sale, I likely wouldn’t buy them without an expert opinion. I’ve been burned before and I’ve learned my lesson.

For what it's worth, here is a certified 1909-S Indian Cent.

And here is a certified 1877 I sold when I was a dealer years ago. NGC called this one an AU-58.

Good for you. I have just decided that I have better odds gambling on coins than even blackjack. But I understand I will get burned from time to time, usually from my own error rather than a seller's deception.

Also, as I have mentioned repeatedly, I do not trust TPGs with attribution or myself with authentication. Life's a gamble, so live LIFE abundantly.

I guess that would depend on his age. If he worked there in the 30s or 40s, IHC were still very much used and the number of tourist visiting Avalon on Catalina were plentiful, me being one of them on a regular basis. I'd like to think his collection was from circulation and the love of the coin.

The person who collected them actually did live in Avalon. He gave them to a friend of his to sell for him because there isn't much of a market in Avalon. I was just told this story a few days ago. The owner wants to sell the collection so I am helping him sell them now. I am going to take the album to a few different coin shops and see who gives the best price above what he is asking. It would probably get a lot more money on eBay but I don't want to deal with fees, insurance, shipping, returns, scammers, etc...

I'm confused as to why Dansco includes a hole for the 1869/69, but not the other varieties which were actually deliberate changes made by the mint. I finished my collection of circulated Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents, not just the standard album holes, but the complete set of mint deliberate die changes. The links in the attached pdf provide background information. Here is a list. What do you think? http://members.iphouse.com/frech001/Al's Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cent Complete Design Set.pdf

I agree, I was thinking about that earlier today. I figure it would be better to either just don’t include any of the varieties/errors or include all of them.
