Are there any? Collector's Universe the answer? I would think that there would be a dealer network where dealers post on..
My guess is that IF something like that exists, you would have to be invited to it. I don't know it it does or not, and I've not even heard rumors of it, just my guess. Not a bad idea, though. If I was in the mood to create message boards anymore, I might just have made one up, invited a few dealers I know, and let them have at it. My message board creation days are over, though.
As a matter of fact, there is one right here on Coin Talk, has been for a long time. You can't see it because you aren't supposed to see it. It's for dealers only. As for dealer networks, yeah there are several of those as well. Dealers pay significant fees to belong to those. And they can buy and sell from other dealers 24-7. Those aren't set up like forums though. They are electronic networks purley for the business of buying and selling among other dealers.
Coinnet or http://www.certifiedcoinexchange.com/ which was bought by pcgs and charges approx. $400/month for dealers. There is also a public section of CCE….Collectors Corner. This is where the CCE dealers post there coins for sale to the public. It is the largest online coin offering in the world. As of today there are 60,634 coins valued at $71,467,820 posted for sale on Collectors Corner. And unlike some other online “stores”, only authorized CCE dealers can offer coins…so you basically know who you’re dealing with and don’t have to think about Chinese counterfeits, whether you’ll actually get the coins you pay for and other issues. You can view the coins on Collectors Corner at http://www.collectorscorner.com/
For whatever it's worth, I will second CBD's recommendation of CCE. I have posted about it many times in the past, but like most things - it's gets forgotten.
No, it's a sales venue. And by and large it is populated only by trusted dealers. And I would recommend it, highly.
Most full time dealers I know don't have the time to sit around and browse forums all day. My friend spends 12 hours a day managing his two shops, so the last thing he wants to do at the end of the day is sit and talk coins more. Of course, maybe thats just the exception. Guy~
Far from an exception. I go to coin shows all the time and always ask dealers if they look at, belong to, check out coin forums and other such web sites. Maybe it's just the many, many that I've asked but unanamously, they all say your kidding. Who has time for doing that. In fact one dealer with his own web site usually gives me a coin or two for checking out his web site for errors and suggestions since he never looks at his own. He payed someone to set it up and so far never looks at it. One really large dealer that usually has 3 or 4 tables and several relatives helping told me he has never even seen a coin forum. Told me he didn't even know there was any. He does a coin show a week so rather busy. So I guess it all depends on the individual dealers. If you have a successful coin store or coin show buisness, not to much time for a coin forum of any kind.
Did you happen to notice that the first thing you see on the left of that web site is OPEN TO COLLECTORS AND DEALERS?
Yes, but they have a "dealers only" section you can subscribe to as a dealer. Collectors not allowed in that section.
Doug, I was going to PM you personally with my response to this comment you made here, but I figure I will try my best to de-personalize my response to it via the internet open forum. I think you might bring it on yourself sometimes, Doug.. Really, I say that with all respect and am not trying to argue. I just want to point out that I am aware that you do have some negative/cynical ways that you bring out and as a concerned member of society, I like to see people happy, not griping. I believe it's natural for people to forget. So I don't think it has anything to do with you. I just wouldn't take it so personally. Anyway, thanks for the ideas and I also want to thank all of you thus far for coming forward with some pretty top secret(not!!) information that I feel a lot of us could actually benefit from if we want to be dealers one day OR if we just want to be well informed collectors .. bnb
BNB - one of these days, maybe, you will hopefully realize that I don't take it personally, never have and never will. Somehow you always manage to read things into my comments that are not there. Of course that's fairly typical of people that try to read between the lines. And I will grant you, in some cases one might need to read between the lines - depending on who it is that is doing the typing. But with me, that is never necessary. For I have no fear of saying exactly and precisely what I mean. I choose my words very carefully so as to remove any ambiguity. You should know that by now. I am not one to worry about being politically correct or hurting someone's feelings. I believe that if everyone were to communicate in this manner - which is how it used to be some years ago - then the world would be a better place. And we wouldn't have people running around saying stuff like - what did he mean by that ? You would know what he meant by that, with no room for doubt. Trust me, it doesn't bother me in the least if people forget what I have said a hundred times in the past. I fully expect many, if not most, of them to forget it. For that is normal. That's what the comment "but like most things" means. And if you truly want to be, to say in your words, "a well informed collector", then you might try doing a little reading, a little research, once in a while. For if you did, you might have found this that was posted, 3 1/2 years ago - especially for people like you, who want to be well informed. Coin Dealers And guess what the top 2 posts are ?
