Just got some ducats back from NGC. Pleasantly pleased with the grades although the no grade of the 1/2 ducat was disappointing since the coin is so nice in hand.

Very nice silvereagle82, all of them!

ps-am I guessing right you are probably of Dutch descent?

hiho off to work we go

VERY nice ducats, I especially like the 1779 which I believe is closer to AU58 than AU55. I have one that NGC slabbed as MS61 and yours is almost as nice. I wish I had a photo to show you.

I own about 2 dozen certified Dutch ducats purchased over the past ten years or so, including an 1849 that ANACS slabbed years ago as MS63, someday I'll resubmit it to NGC and see what they say. Only 14000 of these were minted, it's a pretty rare date.

Here's a ducat with a date I have only found once and I'm happy I had the opportunity to purchase it.....

Who wants to guess the grade that NGC assigned this?

But is it a Netherlands ducat or one of the millions of Russian copies ?

I'm going to guess they said either 53 or 55. Personally I'd say 45 if I was grading it.

Very nice additions Conrad :thumb: I'd like to see other pics of the half ducat myself as I can't make out the mentioned hairlines in the pic.

And for those that don't know this, that 1960 ducat (which is gorgeous by the way) is the 3rd rarest of the entire series (1586 to date) by mintage. It is a very good catch for any ducat collector !!

    No ... French
I just seem to have gravitated more towards the Low Countries since I started collecting gold ... a little of Doug's influence I suppose :)

    hiho ... I'll say AU58 .... It is a very nice ducat !!

Doug here's larger pics of the Salzburg 1/2 ducat.
The main area in question is at 11:00 and 4:00 on the obverse. The reverse is very clear.

    Doug/Anyone,

Was the West Friesland ducat minted at the Amsterdam or Dordrecht mint? or was there a West Friesland mint somewhere else??

I would like to note that the 1587 ducat was the first year of minting of the West Friesland ducat. It is of the Hungarian type design.

1586 was the first year of minting of the Netherlands-United Provinces' ducat. They were struck at the provinces of Holland,Gelderland, Friesland, Zeeland,
    and Utrecht.

French, hey Monsieur? Hmmm, then maybe you can help my son attribute this coin (which we he fell in love with, and 'had' to buy at a coin show). All I know is that it is medieval french. I would really appreciate the help.

    Thanks!

It is a 1461-1483 Louis XI Ecu d'or a la couronne. Saint-Lo mint.

I'd let your son research the interpretation of the legends (Latin) :) If he can't find anything I'll help.

Conrad, thank you. You have helped us greatly.

We had trouble reading the legends as the coin seems to have been clipped, affecting the legends. My son will be happy happy.

    With regards,

    Eduard

Eduard - I will mention that your son's coin looks to be an ex-jewelry mount.

Thanks Doug. Hmm, not so good. That would explain why the coin seems to have been clipped.

There are certain design characteristics which are different. Some are to do with the sword, others the arrows and ribbon around them. Post a pic of your coin and I'll tell you which it is.

I would post the reference material here for you to see for yourself, but it is copyrighted and so I cannot.

That's why I am asking you for the pics.
