I just got a PCGS MS66 1938-D Buffalo for my new 20th century type set that I'm just starting to build. I'm planning for all these coins to be in MS grade, or AU58 (aka AU63 ) I picked the MS66 buffalo for $43.00 with shipping! Numismedia puts its value at $69 and PCGS at $75, so I did pretty good with this purchase. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110467685274&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT The photo isn't the absolute best, but it shows a decent strike with nice details in the hair, and clean fields. I'm pretty sure this will have beautiful lustre when I have it in hand. So far in this set I've got... MS66RD 1939 Wheat Cent MS66 1943-S Steel Wheat Cent MS66 1938-D Buffalo Nickel PR69DCAM 1974 Jefferson Nickel
I just added a beautiful NGC MS66 1943-D Mercury Dime to my set for $27.51 shipped. Numis value: $40, PCGS value: $27, Trends: $35. Another great pick-up! http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/CertResults.aspx?CertNumber=3287655-001
That is a terrific deal on the buffalo! I remember looking at them last year, and my local dealer was selling MS-66 38-Ds for $100 a pop...so good job!
Those coins aren't too badly priced. I'd like to think you can find a raw example for less at a larger show, and there is a relatively large amount of plastic in the prices you paid, but all in all they are nice coins and I hope you like them. A nice start to a 20th century type set. Good luck with the rest of it & thanks for sharing...MIke
CoinKeeper, I love the idea of your type set. I am a type collector myself, so it's always nice when someone else shares your passion. If I could make a suggestion... I would say that as you accumulate more of this high grade set, try to add coins that feature a full strike such as an MS Jefferson Nickel with 6FS, a Mercury Dime with FSB, or a Standing Liberty Quarter with a FH.
