I was looking on the bay and I came across this diime and it could be real, I don't know. What do you think? Personally I don't know the seller from Adam, looks to have a good record but the dime in the ad 230413433745. Looks a little strange around the mouth, you have to go the the ebay number and scroll down. You tell me. I would have linked it but I couldn't gets things to go my way.
if that micro photo is the same coin, then probably legit. Look at the 4, the doubling that you see is not normally doubled on a fake. But, that is my opinion, and why buy a non-certified coin?
I agree with that. I've got seveal of them and they all look similar. Anyone making the fake ones seldom take the time to do anything about the 4. Even the 1 appears correct. Still I don't buy from the internet. Is there a return policy? What is the cost? How much is the postage? If it were really cheap enough, I'd almost take a chance but then again, ALMOST.
Coin looks legit. Maybe not slabbed because maybe it's been cleaned. Seller deals in coins so he's not clueless. Nice coin, but I'd pass.
.....sorry, no slab no buy. maybe not even then, could be counterfeit slab! i trust nothing on the bay.
IMO you are leaning toward being paranoid, at least with respect to eBay. Yes, you definitely have to take more care when buying on eBay. But there's been more than a few disappointments when dealing with Teletrade and Heritage. And I totally agree with you when it comes to coins like this. No slab; no buy. But that's not just on eBay; that's everywhere.
I grade it as F-12 or F-15 (but since it's a key it might get a VF-20). Based on Fine, the greysheet has it valued in the $2000-2500 range. But without it being in a slab, no way I'd pay that much. At best maybe 50% of that, and that's chancy. Too easy to Photoshop out signs of cleaning.
Are you sure you looked that price up right? My Greysheet (old) says $500 - $550 in fine and Heritage prices basically agree with my pricing.
You're correct (hanging my head in shame, appalled and abashed). I looked at the wrong coin. Current CDN Bid is F= $425. CDN Bids are very flat through VF (G=$400; VF=$450). But then prices start moving up quickly.
.....paranoid? hmmm. you can spend your money anywhere you wish and of course so can i. i choose anywhere but the bay. but not spending on the bay doesn't mean one is paranoid, just careful.
Note that I said "leaning toward", not that you were paranoid. And it was your "could be counterfeit slab" comment that made me go that far. Otherwise I generally agree with you. My recent post over in the US Coins Forum [My Newest Coin (Commemorative)] was an eBay win. I had strong confidence in the seller so no worries.
And it was your "could be counterfeit slab" comment that made me go that far. .....sorry if you don't want to think that a slab can be counterfeited, but they can. yours may not be and i hope it's not, but as upsetting as it may sound it happens. i feel the chance of it happening on e-bay is greater than a reputable dealer. imo.
