In case anybody has the grand idea of doing the full set of Morgan Circulation Strikes, consisting of basic circulation strikes, without variants, here it is. It is an incredible sight to behold. https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/do...rculation-strikes-1878-1921/alltimeset/115575
No way. This belongs to a very wealthy collector. It is way out of my league. It has numerous ex Jack Lee, and ex Eliasberg coins.
My set had an average grade of probably 3 grades lower. This is a complete set based on some of the best of the best.
I am sure a set of carefully selected MS63/64 Morgans can be as nice as a high dollar set. Sometimes eye appeal beats grade.
You’ve seen quite a number of the remaining coins after I broke up the set in 2015. I have posted them over the years. Although there are few 67 and 68 coins, I was proud and am proud to own my really nice MS 63-66 coins. I concentrated on eye appeal, for my pocketbook.
That truly is an Amazing Set. At the 1991 ANA in Chicago I saw the the then current finest PCGS Morgan dollar set .
PCGS would not allow a photograph. It is the Coronet-Vermule 1893s, considered the second finest example of that date. PCGS MS 67 CAC.
I think if I ever mustered up enough courage and cash to build a lengthy series set like that it would be a Slider Set of AU58/58+ with good eye appeal but slight circulation on the thought of who in history possibly might of held these coins and used them in days past.
Insurance purposes. It last sold at 1.5 million dollars, and the only pictures allowed were past photographs. https://coinweek.com/us-coins/us-si...ions-offer-coronet-collection-morgan-dollars/
The set is entitled “Coronet Collection”. Strangely, Legend sold a collection of Morgans entitled “Coronet Collection” 6 years ago. See the link below. I checked a few of the coins in the PCGS set against same dates and mints in the auction. Some are the same that sold in the auction and some are not. I wonder about the ones that are same in the set and auction. Was the auction basically a sham for these, did the owner of the set buy them back, did bids not meet the minimum … or what? Stunning coins in any event. Cal https://legendauctions.hibid.com/catalog/59115/the-regency-auction-xii/?tab=0&q=17
The collection was originally split up in two lots, in 2015, in Legends auctions. The 1893s was sold separately. It has been since reunited by an anonymous wealthy collector, and is back together. Here is the current best set, as of 2020. It is not the best of all time, but mighty spectacular: https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/do...ation-strikes-1878-1921-cac/alltimeset/204634
