Interesting coin. There appears to be DDD (die deterioration doubling) on the date based on your pictures.
@Southernman189, I see what you think might be the characteristic "bump" at the bottom of the 4, but IMHO, that isn't the one found on the actual 42/41. I think your characterization of this as a "Poor man's 42/41" is just fine for your own use, but I'd be very hesitant to sell it as such. Steve
I'd never sell or even call it as an error under any name other than 1942-D unless it is graded by a professional grading company.
I see a obvious 1 under the two that is raised and not a scratch even protruding the bottom of the two (circled) hate to beat a dead horse but I am just VERY curious. The one is very obvious when magnified
Well, I'm curious too. But have you considered that what you've circled in the "bottom crook" of the "2" is debris/gunk? And not just a continuation of the "1?" E.g., there appears to be similar gunk in and around the "4." Have you done acetone baths to see if that would clear up these two last digits? Steve
I can't believe nobody posted the real thing... it's CRYSTAL clear, even at low grade: 1942/1 10C (Regular Strike) Mercury Dime - PCGS CoinFacts
Here's a photo of the P Mint 42 over 41: Here's a photo of the D Mint 42 over 41: Someone please post a photo where the 1 is in any other position than those shown above. I've never seen a 42 0ver 41 where the 1 is in the same position (angle) as the OP's coin. If it's authentic then maybe he's discovered a new variety. Just sayin'.
I looked at the site where you send something in to be graded (wow) you have to be a lawyer to understand all the twists and turns just to send it in. I just wanted a site that said "pay this amount, mail it in". There has to be a better way to get this thing looked at by a grading service.
Well to up-date things, I took the dime to a local Flea mkt and had a few coin sellers that has been selling coins for years (yes I bought many from them). Like you folks and myself I was un-sure. So I sent it in TODAY to PCGS to be graded. Wow all total I am out $151.33 for the grade, membership, Mailing and insurance, registered. Sure hope it pans out. We'll see, I'll let you folks know.
Probably the best thing but it does cost extra for errors. At least you got the membership fees at of the way. Best wishes.
