Not a problem. A lot of people call the W series burnished or satin, I guess it means different things to different people. Once in a while the coin shows on tv will come up with an intereesting statement. Although I don't like their prices I do like some of the ways they package and present sets for sale. The other channel that was on had the Lincoln Chronicles for sale at I think somewhere between $225.00 and $230.00 plus shipping and handling. They sold them all in a couple of minutes, amazing to me the volume of coins they sell.

  3. Nothing in current numismatics would make me happier then to have the satin finish mint sets go away. It would be really nice to be able to buy the mint sets and get a complete set, not buy the mint sets, get something totally different, and STILL have to hunt and hope to find the actual coinage.

I don't know why there's such a brouhaha over satins. Frankly, my feeble eyes can barely tell the difference between these and regular business strikes. :smile

    satin finish fini?

I saw the shopping show where "The Coin King" mentioned the cessation of satin finish coins. Although he goes to a lot of shows and buys huge amounts of coins, I am suspicious of this claim. Somehow, I can't see him as having an inside track on mint activities.

It is a good way to promote selling of coins if the buyer thinks that a coin or series will be discontinued. If you listen to his spiel about the "rarity" of whatever coin—and have any knowledge of numismatics—you will know what a load of ... is being passed to the viewer. I've checked other websites (Coin News, etc) and have seen no mention of satin coins. To me, it was just a pitch to sell more coins.

However, to quote Charles Aznavour when he appeared on the Muppit Show, "I could be wrong"

Ken, to me a big part of this is not so much whether the mint will or will not produce the satin finish coins, but how does this guy know this? Do the tenacles of the coin tv shows reach to the highest echelons of the mint? Did the coin king himself decide the mint would stop production of these already rare coins never made or intended for release to the general public and that is the way it is to be?

Seriously though I wouldn't think he would make a statement like this to sell a few more coins in the short term. I think the long term result would cause more problems than it is worth. The other thing is they already sell coins by the truckload.

I find it very strange him stating the mint has announced this, yet I can't find anywhere that it was announced.

Larry, when I first viewed this thread I thought you were going to state that one particular fat guy (Chambers) made this statement. What I discovered was that it was the "motor mouth" on HSN.

Beats the tar out of me where these guys get their info. Guess they're very well connected......

The way anyone finds out about what is going to happen regarding the mint is by asking them. And no you can't just pick up the phone and call them. The people answering the phones don't know anything. You have to ask the right person, in most cases that person is Michael White. And you can find out how to reach him on the mint's web site.

How do you think that the coin mags find out stuff ? They ask, it's that simple. However, don't always expect to get an answer. For the coin mags, and few other pundits, rely on this "inside" information to make their living. And often they are the only ones who "get" answers. And if a mint employee releases these answers, before they are supposed to - it can mean their job.

When it is announced by the mint or in one of the coin mags, then I'll believe it. Until then, it's just a rumor.

The mint leadership probably also doesn't know either.

The mint leadership probably also doesn't know either.
I mean let's face they are idiots to begain with, ^#%& Govt. officials.
For instance last year they did not even premote or have plans in place to market the new Lincoln Cents for 2009 until they saw the interest from the public. Then and only then did they dream up the idea to sell us, (at multible times face value) coins meant for circulation at prices never before heard of. Many of you'all bought these also but many of us did not
    or would not, thank God!

I would like to hear the exact wording the TV show person used to determine if what he said was flat out lying or just glossing over. They do that a lot (glossy) and that is what they mostly sell, gloss. So I don't know what, or how he said said it. Considering the source akin to snakes in the grass, these shopping sites are the least reliable sources of truth around.

Now you'all do not get me wrong I don't dislike all Govt. officials, just the ones that are breathing - the actual mint workers I admire and other Govt. officials that are not forced to lie, cheat and spin some yarn expecting me to believe I admire.
I do however dislike all TV shopping programs and hosts that sell this crap to people ripping them from end to end. I have seen personally 100's times people who bought this stuff bring it in to shops or the show and watch as thier faces drop when they really learn the truth about thier coins value - it's flat out robbery and how these sick SOB's sleep at night is beyound me.
So whatever the TV shopping sites that sells coins state (regarding the Mint's plans) is very, very likley a deception at best.
For the record though I would not mind at all if they quit satin finish coins, I don't like the strike or overall apearence of the coins. They just don't seem to strike up as well.

I like all the new things the mint has done over the last few years. It had to have brought new folks into the hobby. I have always thought, the more the better, but didn't care for the change to satin mint sets. It really messed with a lot of people doing sets in albums. If you wanted to keep that same look to the set, you were searching rolls to find a really nice one.

Is the finish on UNC Comm. dollars the same as what has been used on the UNC Silver Eagles, these last few years?

I tend to agree he would not make this statement to sell a few satin coins, when they also sell tens of thousands of other coins. On another site I asked a member who watched the show what Mike Musak of HSN said, here is what this other member said, who recorded the show:

"I recorded the show on DVR to watch mainly for the banter. I actually have never bought a coin from any of his shows.

BUT, after playing it many times to hear what he was actually saying, it sure sounds like he is saying that ALL satin finishes are done as of 2009, including the ASE. He mentions that he has the 'scoop' from the mint, and that it will be announced to the general public shortly. He prefaces this with him stating that he has previously had the 'scoop' on other numismatic news and that this was just another example. Of course he was pitching the ASE in Satin Finish at the time and I had to really listen carefully to try to determine if he was saying that the RUN of 2009 Satin Proofs was completed, or if the entire Satin Finish series is over. He sure makes it sound like the entire run is over and that it was an multi-year 'experiment' by the mint.

Based on the fact that he (or companies he represents) is probably one of the single largest direct buyers / customers for the Mint, he may indeed have some inside information that has not been released..."

If they stop making them now, how much would the 5 sets increase???

How much would they be worth? I have no idea. I guess an example might be the '65, '66, and '67 Special Mint Sets the mint produced those three years. I don't collect them, but I do have Memorial Cents and Roosevlet Dimes from them, they were very inexpensive.

Probably not a heck of a lot. And those SMS's that Larry mentioned? You can still pick those up for reasonable prices....

  17. Sorry I just spotted this! The coin in my avitar is the Norway 1 Øre coin, that was issued from 1958-1972. I think the one I used was from 1959, I have four different versions of it.

    Here is the whole coin

Why should they increase? The five years of sets have already been produced, they have a "fixed" rarity and current value. If they don't make any more the number made isn't going to change and if the rariety doesn't change why should the value. Here's a news flash, they aren't making anymore 2008 ASE's either but that doesn't make them more valuable.

You are correct, the supply has not changed, but price does not directly equate to supply. Rather price = demand / supply. Rephrasing the original question "If they stop making them now, how much would the demand for 5 sets increase???" Now, the problem with that question (or the original) is that no one can answer it. If they could, they would be doing business beyond our scope.

All coins end up with a set amount. Then supply and demand take over, who can predict this. Also at times things are "hot" maybe cool or maybe not, who can predict the peak or if it is only temporary.

Let go out on a limb here and say a series of coins to watch over the nest few years is the Liberty Nickel.

Yeah, why because you collect them? Back it up with facts. They are over 100 years old and NOW they're going to go up? Wanna buy some swamp land in Florida? LOL.
