Wow. Wouldn't it be cool to start using that in 2010 instead of just changing the reverse (and slightly modifying the obverse).

Thanks for sharing. I like it.

I like the design, but it looks very high relief. I wonder how it would have handeled circulation.

Here is another "what might have been." This was Frank Gasparro's design for a "Liberty Head Dollar" for the small sized dollar that replaced the Ike. Eventually SBA was chosen as the image for the coin...but wouldn't this have been much nicer.

Ive seen this before and I think it would have been a great choice. I myself cant stand the SBA dollar.

Many pattern coins I find better looking or interesting then the design that won out.

No, they made the right choice. Abe looks very sad and not very Presidential. Abe should be looking right toward the future and not left towards the past.

I don't think the direction the person is facing really matters. I know in some cases, right symbolizes the future and left symbolizes the past...but we have both on our coins so I don't think it really matters for US coinage. Roosevelt on the Dime, Washington on the Quarter, and Kennedy on the Half Dollar all face to the left. Jefferson did as well for decades on the Nickel, only in the last few years has that changed. So, I don't believe that symbolism is reflected on US coins.

Lincoln looks rather sad on the coin linked by the OP.

The mint used to be of the mind that changing the coin designs was not something to be done annually. These days, we do it 5 times a year. I liked the consistency of the old coins and wish we'd get back to it but that’s just me.

And this differs from Lincoln in RL how? ;)

I liked it that way too. I think they had it right around the 1950s and before. Change the design every 30 years or so. Consistent, but enough change to keep it interesting.

I really, really dislike dead Presidents on commonly circulating coins and I would never collect them. That's my informal protest of modern coinage designs....

I have been convinced already that the people in charge of voting for what design to use purposely pick the most unartistic one (then again, the Sac dollar aint too bad)

I completely understand your complaint. I wish we round return to Liberty on our coins as it was meant to be. That said, I find your comment interesting based on your avatar of an Eisenhower Dollar. I know one could argue that the Ike isn't a commonly circulating coin...but it was intended to be.
