I don’t agree that this coin is weakly struck. It has details present on non-high spots that would be lost if it was. One example is the crease on the neck is very clear. I just think it’s worn.
It really needs to have some luster to make the AU-50 grade. Dullness might indicate an old clearing with something like baking soda or silver polish. The sharpness of the design devices is no the only grading criteria once you reach the AU level. Luster is required too.
I don't think its dull . It appears to have luster . I think it may be the photos but not my coin so hard to say for sure.
Let’s put it this way: is it a coin you would feel comfortable spending thousands on it? If it were any other date, would you even consider owning it. Face it—it is not a particularly attractive coin.
This is a key concept that I struggled with as a collector for a long time. That desire to “fill a hole” in the set would sometimes blind me to waiting for the right coin. This coin has terrible eye appeal. It’s ugly. I’d rather wait and find a lower grade coin that I enjoy looking at than something that has poor eye appeal. That being said. The OP seems to believe this coin is weakly struck and I completely disagree.
at thousands no , but not everyone can afford coins in the thousands so looking at coins in the AU-50 range on this particular year . It looks on the bubble I agree looking to be about AU-50 in my eyes though I could see it as XF-45. I dont think the lighting is helping the color that would remain to be seen once its in hand
Agree 100%. I would rather fill the 1893s hole with a VF coin, with original surfaces, and some eye appeal, than that coin. It is not weakly struck—it is worn, dipped to death, and unattractive. 1893s is an above average strike issue.
Not weakly struck completely but not a great strike I do not believe. I think the strike on some of the high spots is not great not terrible . Why do you think this coin has poor eye appeal though? I think its the photo lighting changing the color . Not saying its a perfect coin or the right coin. My original post was how close does this look close to AU-50 which I believe it makes though I agree it could be XF
Does anyone think that rim hit at 4:00 on the reverse is enough to cause grading problems? I've learned from experience that I can't always judge which rim hits are acceptable to a grader and which ones aren't.
I know you look at countless Morgans but I dont see how you can tell its been over dipped by the photos , their lighting is terrible and makes there coins look cartoon like
