Heck yeah - I've never met Doug in person, but I believe that I can call him a friend, and one that I have known since my first forum.

I met some guys on the old CoinWorld forum that I became trading buddies with - sent them thousands of dollars worth of state quarters, and they in turn sent me back the same ammount in D quarters....never met any of those guys face to face, but I still talk with them a couple times a year.

Alot of other people that I have "met" on the forums through the years are friends, and I'm sure I'll meet many more!

I have certainly made lasting friends in these forums. Phone calls, MSN, and in one case, a flight from northern Canada to southern California just to meet up and talk coins. I consider these people friends for sure. One CT member will be coming from the states to northern Alberta, which is where I live so we ate going to try and meet up. Although he'll be landing 6 hours from
    where I live. We'll see.

Before the forums I only had a few collector friends. They were all from local shops and shows. Today I feel rich with friends from all over the world.
Last January I went to the Fun show. My first really large show. I'll never forget it.
Got to shake hands and talk with so many. It was so cool to actually see folks that I had been talking with over the past 8 or 10 years.

I am proud to say that I have had the honor and privilege of meeting many different forum menbers in person over the years. And yes we have formed lasting relationships. And I've met many, many more that I don't even recall as having met on a forum but yet they knew me as a result of my participation on forums. They'd just walk up to me and introduce themselves at a coin show, a dealer's shop, even gun shows.

Coin forums have allowed me to make many long and lasting friendships that I never would have had otherwise. And there are still plenty of others out there that I consider very dear friends that I have yet to meet in person. Hopefully one day I will.

Actually coin collecting is just one of the many, many hobbies humans do for numerous reasons. If you look at the population of members of any coin forum, it is really insignificent compared to the population of people in the USA alone. Even the PCGS forum, probably the largest coin forum, has only about 30,000 members. Compare that with 300,000,000 people in the USA.
If you search for other forums you would find similar people involved in thier passtimes or hobbies as much as with coins.
For example the AVS forum. There they are just as involved with science as people here are with coins. There is also a few web site Forums for Lead Soldier making molds and materials. Lots of forums for guns, knives, swords and even Templar collectors.
Coins are just more popular since more are available to the total population.
Although I've never seen a Beanie Baby Forum.;)

I have yet to meet anyone from this forum, because I haven't hit a show yet since I joined this place. Hope to change that sometime soon... it kinda sucks not being able to talk about my collection with anyone in real life. My family and current friends could care less.. they look at me like i'm speaking Japanese. lol

I wonder if these friendships get competitive? I can see that happening, and also make you pick up the collecting pace. "Gotta have" could become "Gotta have before him" ... good way (for me) to end up in the poorhouse

I would say yes. I have never met any of the other members of this forum in person, but I have interacted with many of them for a period of several years now. I have shared a lot with them and they have done the same with me. So, I feel I have made some lasting friendships.

Meeting people from CT...never done it yet. I live close to quite a few of them but just never have the time to make it to shows or commit to the drive, mostly due to work. I'm looking forward to meeting one this next September, when I'll be in Doug's neighborhood for a wedding (not his). Coins may be discussed, but like every other time I meet up with coin collecting friends, the subject usually changes with the consumption of cold beer and greasy food.

I think you're in for a surprise. I don't think Doug has much time to chat, he's a knowledge consuming machine. Programmer for just that.

Oh I got lots of time to chat now a days. I mostly just sit around the lodge and check the forum or play poker on Poker Stars. I go huntin once in a while, but other than that, it's pretty laid back around here ;)
