Come on, its not like they were going to fire up the Carson City or New Orleans mint just to stamp out 175,000 coins.
Actually they could if there is a coin press on those sites. The trouble is it's harder (takes more pressure) to strike silver dollars than it is smaller copper tokens. The old equipment might not be able to take it.
There was a rumor early on in the 2021 Morgan Dollar process that the Mint might haul a press to the Carson City mint for these. Probably cost prohibitive. The original press #1 is still there and used for special occasions.
If so, I would want them made with base metal, made for circulation, but perhaps not circulated like the golden dollars. Size/weight/comp of the Ike dollar. And do not flood the market! That way people of all types can have some. I'm not against numismatic versions made of silver.
Yeah it was considered but then determined that it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to get modern presses to these mints, get all the materials and staff there and then ship it all back to where it came from. It was just too cost prohibitive for them to do it. They obviously aren't going to crank out 175k on the old press at the CC mint. So they did the next best thing in recognition of the old mints. (Since we're well past the 100 year anniversary for them, I personally could have done without these privies, but they made them so I got some. The P,D,S would have been sufficient for me.) I read that the original dies for these mints were made at Philadelphia and shipped out to the branch mints so even most of the original coins were made with Philly produced dies. Occasionally they would share dies and punch a new mintmark.
Yea there was just no way that was gonna happen. I actually do like Privy marks in general and hope they keep doing more a lot of world coins have some really great ones. That said the O looks like some weird egg that could have been done better but I do like that they’re doing things to catch up with everyone else.
come on now, they had $3.48 million dollars in silver planchets to strike 175K from Carson City and sell them all for $14.875 million dollars. I think a few hundred thousand dollars up to 1 million was in the budget to ship a press over to carson city and back..... hahahaha
That's what they have done in the past. They cannot in this state take your money until it ships. When Ricks US coins started up they pulled that all the time and i informed them that was illegal in certain states and got my coin's,one of the few times i have bought from him
I just got off the phone with the mint. They assured me the ship date will be as planned, October 4. What are the odds they are right?
https://www.coinnews.net/2021/05/21/pre-release-2021-morgan-and-peace-silver-dollar-information/ "Production of the five 2021 Morgan Silver Dollars will halt at 875,000. No more than 200,000 of the 2021 Peace Silver Dollars will be made. 2021 Morgan and Peace dollar products will stay at the current six — no set combinations or other options will be offered. The United States Mint will allow authorized bulk purchasers to claim up to 10% of the silver dollars before they go on sale to the public. The U.S. Mint also hopes the production of Morgan and Peace dollars will continue into next year and beyond."
If that's true then they're going to lose the authorization lock and have to reauthorize in October - at which time there are going to be either outdated cards or people without enough credit available. I guess they take that into account in their business plan...
That's a very good point. I had not thought of it. I know I'll be okay but many may not be as fortunate.
I doubt they've taken that into consideration it's the first time they've done it, and, we all have seen how they pull off just sales of interesting items to people so yeah, I expect a whole lot of "there was a problem with your order payment method, it has been cancelled" emails being sent and those items being freed up for sale to other folks rather than them try to see if the person wants to correct it and get the item.
If I manage to purchase all the releases, I'm somewhat concerned about 3-6 charges all hitting my card on the same day in October. I think it seems likely a lot of purchases will get canceled after being flagged by fraud prevention. I think a lot of people will just forget and not have enough credit to cover the purchase in a few months. I anticipate a lot of coins becoming available from the mint again after they expedite orders.
I'm in agreement, I see by October all kinds of roadblocks that wind up with orders cancelled and product being back up for sale in short order as they get taken off hold and put back up for sale from the inventory.
