This penny came in the mail today and I have been trying to nail down either a mint or a moneyer. It is obviously a short cross penny and of Henry III. I "think" it may be London based on what I "think" I see: VLF ON L. I matched that with this
    + RAVLF•ON•LVNDE from https://www.rodblunt.com/short-cross-pennies-11

    Am I anywhere even close?

Yes, I see the VLF ON L that would indicate that minter and mint.

    Awesome!
This is my first hammered English penny. I've always admired from afar but haven't studied too much.

Those hammered denarii are addictive. I've never owned anything older than William I, save a few Northumbrian coins. I like the HIII-EI coins because of the shear variety of mints and mintmasters. There are even a smattering of ecclesiastical issues from Durham and then the oft traded over the border mint at Berwick to liven matters up.

Yes they are a wee bit overwhelming! I could definitely see myself getting addicted though. I spent 2 years in London which now makes this coin all the cooler.

Assuming the L is London, North lists a Ledulf and a Raulf, with Raulf having a much longer tenure.

Do you have a reference for when the moneyers were active?

Isn't this information listed in JJ North's works? I looked at getting those reference books, but changing collecting into more Scottish I just kept my Seaby and Spink catalogues.

No idea. The only reference book I own is one on Byzantine coinage. Most of my knowledge of ancients and what very little exposure I've had to medieval coins have been from online resources.

I'd recommend getting Jeffrey J. North's English Hammered Coinage. Back when I collected more English hammered the prints were done in the 1970s and were out of print for years so hard to find and expensive. Now it is updated and available on major online booksellers.

According to North, Ledulf struck only classes 7b and 7c (c.1222-1252), both Henry III. Raulf struck 5c, 6a,b,c,d and 7a,b (c. 1204-1236), John and Henry III.

I found the 2 books for sale. $120 for the pair....ouch.
I will look for the digital version today.

Books aren’t cheap, but knowledge is priceless.
