I recently purchased some coins from an elderly gentleman. Along with the coins he had a bank note (?) This note came from his family and he knows nothing about it. He doesn't want to sell it, but would like to know something about it. I'm not able to post pictures but will give what info I can from the note. Any info that I can take back to him would be appreciated. The note says Worcester County National Bank across the top. It is a $1 note and is basically the same size as a modern $1 bill. Beneath the name of the bank it says BLACKSTONE. It appears to be dated July 14, 1865. On the left it says "This note is secured by bonds of the United States deposited with the U.S. Treasury in Washington." It has a serial number in red "A309438" Thanks in advance, Tim
Does it look like this but with the Bank Name like you describe? In order to fit the cash registers notes from New england were known to be trimmed quite a bit.. Or does it look like this? If it is a $1 note then it should not look like the $10 I posted.. RickieB
RickieB, That is exactly what it looks like! Thank you! Any info/history on these. This gentleman is 80 years old now and says this has been in his family since he can remember. He'll appreciate your help.
It is a National Banknote..if the reverse looks the same (black ink vignette) then it is whats called an "Orginal"...I will look it up in the census and let you know what I find out.. Standby.. RickieB
I need to know exactly what the Banknote says: Look at the one I posted and get me the detailed info.. This couldbe a very rare note..what condition is it in based on what I have posted?
The note appears to be identical to the one you posted. I can't see the back of the note. He has set it on a piece of orange paper (not attached), and then sealed it in a saran wrap type of covering. The serial number is 2775. Everything is the same, but where you're says Bank of New York National Banking, his says Worcester County National Bank and instead of Association, his says Blackstone. I would guess that signatures would be different as well. I can not find a charter number. Tim
Tim.. I do not have the 6th Edition of Mr. Kellys Book on National Banknotes, but I do have the 5th Edition. It is not listed in his Census and I have emailed Mr. Kelly asking if any have been reported. Here is what you need to do for this man. This could be a very rare note as I mentioned, we will have to wait and see. #1. Gently remove the saran wrap and place the note in a Mylar sleeve. You can get this at a coin shop..make sure you get the Large Size Sleeves as it should not fit into a normal sleeve. #2. Do not bend, drop, fold, handle this note in any wrongful way. As soon as I hear back from Mr. Kelly, I will let you know. I would be interested to see an image of this note, how do the margins compare with what I posted? Also, if he wants to sell..I would consider such a purchase. RickieB
The top margin is similar to what you posted. The left, right, and bottom appear to be cropped right up to the border. I will be able to get a mylar sleeve next weekend. I had planned on going to see my local dealer today and I know he has them. I also mentioned this note to him and was supposed to show it to him, but living in Western PA, the roads are icey today. I drove about 5 miles and turned around. I'll try to figure out a way to get pictures for you. Thanks again for all the help. I know he will appreciate it as well.
From your descripton, the note has been trimmed. This may effect the value if there were quite a number of them reported, but until I learn the Charter # and reported notes, if any, handle it with ultimate care. RickieB
Tim... This falls under Charter # 1207 Blackstone, MA This note is only 1 of 4 reported. Please do as I say to protect the note. It's a keeper for sure! If he will let you my service fee's are simply a image of the note..LOL Ask and see if he will let you..get it out of the saran wrap! The Central Vignette of the Note is named "Concordia" it was engraved by Charles Burt, while the reverse vignette is named "Landing of the Pilgrims, by Edwin White and also engraved by Charles Burt. It represents an Allegorical of Union and Peace. He has a great and rare note! RickieB
That is absolutely fantastic. Thank you very much for the help. I know he'll be pleased. I have no idea what to do now, other than tell him what I have found out.
That's OK, you've done more than enough. I appreciate the info. I'll try to figure out a way to get pictures. if I can I'll post them Tim
Pictures of Bank Note (hopefully) I just took two pictures of the bank note. I'll try and follow Speedy's instructions and see if this works. Never posted photos before. Tim
Tim... You can send me the original jpegs and I will post them..the images are way too small. Send them to rickieb1@live.com Thanks RickieB
