put a bid in and won it for 15... she's been mistreated but... I'm pretty sure I nabbed a 44/81 added pcgs example at bottom for comparison.. can't wait to see it in hand
As I see it right Now . It's inconclusive . I would wait for it to be in hand . Looks like a "dug" find . IMHO
it is a dug find with improper cleaning but a good boil should remove most of that black tarrey coating i think... but your right no matter how much I believe the pics show it won't be sure until it is hand
Good luck. I look forward to seeing it when you get it. As it stands, I can't tell if it is or isn't. So much corrosion and grime. Clean that lady up
Me? I'm trying to figure how PCGS, or anyone for that matter, decided that it is an "8" under the first "4". Also, there appears to be another digit under the top right loop of the "8" and another digit under the top left of the second "4". Can anyone explain that for me?
Definitely hard to say for sure but it kinda looks like it is. Once you get her and treat her right it should become easier to see.
I can't give you the reason "why" it was done, but a considerable number of 1844 and later 1851s had their dates struck upside down then overstruck properly creating these overdates.. the 51 is much easier to spot then the 44 but both are great varities "IF" you can find one in the wild... the prices on IDd errors would start around 75-100 even in this condition so have had to really hunt to find one for the $20 LC set
I'm doing my best to imagine the 1844 upside down on the PCGS image, but I can't see it either. I sure wish we had a specialist, here, who attributed this variety and could create the overlays.
