1963 D Full Steps Nickel... Worth of this coin depends on grade... high value in MS60 or above...I'm guessing MS63+... Any good ideas on the grade this coin will receive from PCGS? Price guide lists it for $8500 in MS65.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160382461693#ht_500wt_1182 Thanks
Not sure what it would be worth, but I would give 100-to-1 odds that the coin sold in that auction does not truly have full steps.
Yeah I hope it does but if not its going back for refund. I did buy by looking at the Picture of the reverse..the steps look full...but they may run together...His feedback is great but I'm not sure most people who buy Full Steps understand the slightest tick will kill the FS designation if graded by PCGS or NGC. I really want a PCGS 63 D FS in my collection.
then you'd better get ready to return this one. The one pictured in the auction isn't even close to FS. If you look at the enlarged pictures, you see that the steps aren't even complete across the middle. Personally, I think you should have checked it out better before you bid on it.
Well I use Picasa 3 to enlarge the pictures. It does a decent job enlarging and not distorting the picture too badly. They do look full steps to me when greatly enlarged. But I'll just wait and see.
Speedy, if I remember correctly this is your site, no? great source of information about Jefferson, I have really appreciated being able to use it as a reference often.
yes - that is correct. I really don't know how much longer it will be online as some major changes has happened in my life in the last few months. It is no where near the point it needs to be at to be a great help, as I have TON's of infomation that needs to be uploaded. I'm going to try and switch hosting servers and keep it going but we will have to see - Speedy
Speedy, I've actually went to your site many times. Great site and many sites have hyperlinks to it to explain full steps. Why don't you ad Google Adsense to your site and also offer paid rotating and static banners on each page. I mean that's targeted advertising to the max. You have a page rank of 2. I think you could make some money. You could also join Commission Junction and have live eBay FS nickel auctions scrolling on the side of each page as well. The pages are light and there's plenty of room for advertising. Google adsense only takes a few minutes to set up as you may know. At the very least, VarietyNickels.com is a seven year old domain and that website you could sell for a good sum if you have to. Sedo.com has brokers that will sell the site for you if you decide you have to take it offline.
oh it isn't about the money at all - I used to co-own a webhosting company and I've never had to pay for hosting. Even now it isn't costing me anything, it is just that I feel bad not putting up any more of the infomation. I have books, and boxes, and emails full of pic's, data, dates, info, and varieties that need to be posted...just no time. Maybe a rich uncle will leave me $$$ and I can just retire and post the info! Speedy
I wouldn't feel bad at all. I mean it is a great reference site that many of us use all the time!...Thanks for putting it up and all the work that went into it.
I gotta agree! I am starting to think that many of the sellers on ebay just throw around "full steps" on any jeff nickel they're selling. Maybe some of them don't know what full steps are, I don't know. This single link has a pic that shows you what full steps are. The other sites I've seen confuse the issue... http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-1977.html
If using NGC standards, I will give odds higher than that. However, PCGS just might give it full steps. Take a look at the one they already gave the designation which sold for over $9,000. INSANE! http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1110&Lot_No=615
In all fairness, the reverse of just about any Jefferson Nickel minted in the 60's is terrible. If you look at my registry set, you will notice that I only own 3 coins minted after 1955. The reason is because I can't find these dates with eye appeal that meets my standards. I do know that when I finally find a nickel from the early 60's with the look I want, I will be very aggressive in acquiring it.
Yeah my coin is full steps. I finally got a great lupe and light to see them. When turn correctly, the very tiny nick is not on the steps. And actually nice looking steps. I feel sure PCGS will give it the FS designation. I can't believe they gave that coin linked in above post a FS designation.! But I read somewhere the more rare the FS designation , the more lenient they are on giving the designation, where they wouldn't in other coins more common to the FS designation. I also read NGC does the same thing when grading. SORRY WRONG COIN!
