Hello again my friends. Today's topic of discusion is "To open or not to open ?" that is the question. Starting last year in 2020 I decided to buy at least 1 Mint Sealed stack of American Silver Eagles per year moving forward. I do purchase other Eagles each year that are not mint sealed. But make an extra effort to by at least 1 mint sealed stack. Since I already have the 2020 and 2021 sealed tubes I just pre ordered the new 2021 Type 2 ASE. Yes the price and premiums are outrageous but I ordered them anyway as painful as it was Mint sealed anything is awesome in my book. I must admit I do I have a problem with opening anything that is Mint sealed. In fact the weird thing is I only buy them to never open them lol Crazy I know, it's kind of like the package in the movie Castaway with Tom Hanks. With the sealed tube you don't know whats inside in regards to error coins. It's like an unsolved mystery tormenting me, but for some reason I like it So fess up. Would you open them? Yes, No, Maybe? How long would you last? Cheers!
I wouldn't. For no other reason than to avoid fingerprints and potential damage. If you want an ASE to fondle (and I totally get it).... Run down to your LCS and pick one up.
Type 2 ASE 2 month wait until delivery What do you all think about the Type 2 new reverse design? To be honest I won't know how I really feel until it's in my hands. I ordered a couple raw coins too so I can handle them.
Ask yourself Why do I buy these? If you want to handle them, go to your local LCS and buy some so you can act like Scrooge McDuck. if you bought them to try and find some high grade ones to slab and sell at a profit, good luck. I can tell from your opening statement that you bought them to enjoyed them sealed so leave them that way.
For the record I could never bring myself to open any of them I only buy them to squirrel them away like a time capsule
they don't come like this from the mint, meaning this is a marketing gimmick also. inside the monster box are those tubes no tape, no labels, no plastic wrap, just the stopper type cap. they are adding the label and plastic wrap sealing each tube, but your guess is as good as mine if they actually blindly grab a tube and never open it, or if they search them first for the nicest examples make up the rest of the tube and package it. the item description seems like they want you to believe it's unsearched, not sure how true that is though. my opinion, you're paying an additional $47 for a sticker and plastic wrap. it's like 40 cents cheaper to buy 20 silver eagles and they'll likely send them in the tube for ease of packaging anyways. but the 40 cents difference over 20 coins, I don't mind, it's that extra $47 for the sticker and plastic wrap I have a problem with, but that's me. it's one more silver eagle roughly. I am curious to find out if JM bullion will pay more for them like this if you tried to sell them back unopened, like $47 dollars more, than they would pay for the normal tube without the plastic wrap and sticker? so would I open them? An answer to the above question would be my determining factor on it. if they'd give me the $47 back for leaving it unopened when I sell it back to them, I'd keep it sealed, otherwise I'd open them and likely not buy them in that format again and just buy 21 silver eagles.
I concur but the first strikes and sealed tubes typically sell at higher price tags so the premiums are just passed on to the purchaser and not absorbed as a loss.
I admire you. I know myself too well. You really DO have your hands in a bunch of things. You and me better never hang out, lol.
You are correct about the mint sealed aspect. I purchase these from a Collector's standpoint to leave them sealed. They are however allegedly unsearched by the bullion dealers who sell them and sealed as such. I trust JMB but who knows I purchase quite a few Eagles per year for stacking, albums, collecting etc.
There is your answer. The State coins and some others my mom had bought for my son in his growing years, never been opened. He is 23 now and well they are still where I put them years ago. He was grandma’s eyes, so hey, there may be something waiting for my son when he is ready to open.
