June 28, 1914 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the start of WWI June 28, 1919 was the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and the end of WWI Austria owed a bunch of war reparations and they "solved" the problem by printing a ton of money, pretty much making it worthless. (hyperinflation) Here are some Austrian banknotes from 1920 and 1921 (100 years old!!!)
Interesting. My first thought was they looked a lot like the illustrations in a Comic Book. Thanks for sharing.
Only the first note (90 heller) is Austrian. The others are German Serienscheine notgeld, not Austrian. German Notgeld is in marks (M) and pfennig (pfg). Austrian Notgeld is in Kroner (K) and heller, While Austria suffered post war inflation, it was not as severe as the German hyperinflation of 1923. The Austrian monetary reform of 1925 converted K 10,000 to 1 schilling.
