Hi everyone. Just picked this up on Teletrade the other night. Can anyone tell me what indicators NGC used to come to the assined grade of AU 50? Other than the 3 or 4 obvious contact marks? Other than that I think it's got great eye appeal. What say you? Thanks your feedback is appreciated. Regards, Tony

One of the best 3 leggers I have ever seen but actually on the fence about it now with those NGC pics.. Let's see some of your pics of it in hand.

Tony, it is a nice looking 3-Legger! There is some wear apparent on both sides and I think that AU 50-55 range is appropriate. Hard to tell in plastic and not in hand to see the luster. IMO.

But what about the contact marks? Does it retract from the overall eye appeal in your opinion?

Personally I would not have bought the coin, I think NGC screwed the pooch on this one and slabbed a damaged coin. That L is not a contact mark, that's damage.

That's what I thought. Well, back she goes. I'm glad they have a 7 day no questions asked return policy. Although I'm not happy with the restocking fee, those "contact marks" would be weighing on my mind for a long time if I were to keep this coin. Thanks for all of your replies.

Man I am impressed just as usual. I looked at it never even saw the L I was just thinking man thats one sweet Buffalo, now I can't even look at it. It's just like buying a horse you see the papers the color the confirmation and get wowed then you watch it walk and run and its off to the glue factory. Well it used to be now you just feed it to old age I am glad you can return the Nickel.

What makes you say that is damage. I've looked at 10's of thousands of coins in my life and most circulated coins have marks on them. I'm just curious why you think that "L" mark is damage and not the other 3 or 4 that I see as well.

    Good find, Doug!

Listen to GD(Doug), he's right.. The coin is ugly and at first I loved it but sat on the pictures all day(for about 3 hours straight) and analyzed the heck outta it and it has those ugly marks..

Send it back, don't buy a 3 legger unless you can get a "Blow you outta the water" example like I just did off Heritage. Don't worry, they'll come around ;)

Now, you want to know what a near perfect AU coin looks like?

I just won this on Heritage on Dec. 3(ironically my bday and day of high end coin retirement) ;)

    BNB,

Those two posts made me cringe for you and have filled me with the feeling that another multi-member beat-down is imminent.

I have already decided to send the coin back when I receive it. They just shipped it yesterday and I don't have it in hand yet. There are definitely better examples out there for the money. Beautiful coin by the way BNB.

There are beat downs but they are usually unecessarily started by people who either don't like me for my jewels or just jerk chains for fun..

Anyway, thank you.. I am shooting straight from the hip throughout and am glad you made the decision you did, Alf. You'll find better out there, believe me, I did.

I don't feel it's ugly but that mark is a bit strange.

If not for the fact that it's a three legger, it may have come back with an XF grade....nice coin and great pickup by you my friend. :smile

Because I don't think that L is just a random contact mark like the others. While I will admit that it is possible for such a mark to occur by accident, I think the probability of such a thing is extremely low. I think the mark was placed there intentionally by a person thus making it damage.

Doug.. So an L on a 1864 is a good thing and the L on the 3 legged is a bad thing.. LOL.. oh, and you have such a way with words my friend.. re;: the dog comment... I almost shot coffee out my nose on that one..

FWIW.. I agree the L is not just a bad mark. Looks like a counterstamp to my tired ole eyes.
