Was very happy to pick this up for a very reasonable price! Unfortunately lost a companion piece when I should have bid higher after winning the 1st (and better) piece. I look forward to framing this and hanging it on the wall in my office. Thoughts and comments welcome!
Darryl... In their book, there are examples of all the borders, florals and other engraving styles..it is really a nice book. I got lucky and found one on Amazon...a little expensive at $100 but well worth it I thought. Nice pick up! RickieB
RickieB Thanks! Can you please pm me a link to the book. What I like about this is that it is an Intagilo print and it looks like the detail is really going to be nice. Here is the description for this print: About the item(s): Printing method: Intagilo Total size of the paper in millimeter: 182 X 241 +/- (Wide X Tall) Printed by: American Bank Note Company Year printed: Before 1960
Thanks I am waiting to hear if I beat a CT member out on this. Have to wonder how big is the group of people that collect this type of thing???
Very nice pick up !...I have 3 of The AMERICAN BANK NOTE Archive Series Sets, the series start in 1987 thru 1992 ,All intaglio proof vignettes ,keep an eye out for them they are a nice, most complete sets have 12 pages of vignettes ,each page has about 8 vignettes . An additional sheet comes with each page with an explanation of the vignette by # & the engraver also the notes/stamps/stock certificates or bonds they were printed on.
Thanks Connor - - I have seen the 12 online and they all look really-really nice! I have been looking for authentic older prints that are not as common ~ like the eagle from IBNC I picked up last month. Hopefully I will continue to find some unusual pieces - if indeed these are unusual.?.
ABNCo OK...if I see any advertisement posters like you have posted I'll let you know,I'm looking for individual eagle vignettes like you posted also, very hard to find but worth the hunt, here are a few Eagle Vignettes from one of the ABNCo Archive Series.
Hey Darryl, I bought a different print from the same seller today. I saw those two and considered them, but picked up one that has local ties to me. I will post it and a little background on it tomorrow, too late right now.
Darryl.... The Title of the Book is "The Story of The American Banknote Company" By: William Griffiths released December 1958 There are 4 of them "Used" at Amazon..here is the Link.. http://www.amazon.com/story-American-Bank-Note-Company/dp/B0007E7LII RickieB
Here is the one I picked up in the same auction Darryl, probably one you don't see too often.. If your wondering why anyone would want a Frog print, let me explain. The image is from an obsolete note from Windham, Ct., which is 1/2 hour from my home, here is the note.. and here is a very short explanation why the frogs are on the note, During the summer of 1754, Colonel Eliphalet Dyer recruited a local regiment to fight in the French and Indian wars. Those left behind in Willimantic were vulnerable to attack. During a steamy-hot June night, their worst fears were realized. Unearthly screams emanated from the darkness. Young boys and old men grabbed muskets and fired blindly into the night. Many believed that the day of judgment had arrived; others hid under their beds. At dawn, the awful truth was revealed. Hundreds of dead and dying frogs were discovered in a dried -up millpond close to the town. Their screams were the sounds of their battle to find moisture in the drought-ridden pond. From that time on, Windham became known as the scene of the "Battle of the Frogs. Here is a picture of the present day bridge in Windham Now I need to find the note to add to my collection. In the last pic, those are Frogs on each side of the bridge entrance.
I did see the print and yes it did strike me as a little odd in the company of the other prints that were offered. So again, I have learned something interesting. Thank you and congrats on winning! This has developed into one of those nice security engravers informational posts! Good luck finding your note!!! Do you know who did the engraving? BR ~ Darryl
No, I was hoping someone might chime in and help with that. I didn't get engraving yet, hopefully there is some info included with it.
