I just started looking at half dollars yesterday. I got several from my bank, and managed to get 3 40% silver ones my first try. I also got a 1997 that is very strange. First, it has a plain, flat edge. No reeding anywhere across the edge, so I really don't think the reeding has been worn off. The copper line on the edge is also very strong. The faces of the coin are very odd as well. They look like they are covered with tinfoil or silver leaf or something. Very shiny, but the entire surface of both sides is covered with small fissures and scratches. Again, due to the uniformity of the scratches, I have a hard time believing it's wear. Anyone have any ideas? I don't really have a camera, or I would post some pics...
Hi, Yep, I see them all the time. Art is right. It is the result of heavy use in casino slot machines. I am working on a box of halves and there are at least two of them in every roll, if not more Thanks, Bill
mines is a 1996 but fits your description I found this 1996 Kennedy Half while roll searching too & was going to start a new thread until I read your description. Do these photos look like the your 1997 ?
