There are surprisingly many here that call them pennies, or is that mostly a west coast thing? ;)

And a nickel is called a nickel yet on the reverse it says five cents. So is the correct term a five cent piece instead of a nickel? ;)

Lol!! So true. I guess the answer is, that no matter how one says it, as long as we know what it is. Lol. I know for sure I have had some lessons here on this site on my terminology. I’m just a southern Cajun, so you may know how we word things lol. “This here” or “Dat penny”. Lol. But a nickel is still a nickel and a penny is still a penny lol.

So a government entity got something wrong and you're surprised?

Correct term is five cent piece. Nickel is a slang term and it was also used for the flying eagle cents, coppernickel indianhead cents and nickel three cent pieces before it was applied to the copper nickel five cent piece. So a "nickel" could refer to any one of those four coins

I just think people shouldn't get so excited when someone uses the word penny when referring to a 1 cent U. S. coin. I've been using the word penny my whole life and can't remember it ever causing someone to misunderstand me. People need to concentrate on things that really matter not penny vs cent!! JMHO

Nice '81 Morgan's. I'm a Morgan collector and yours are great examples of keepers. Thanks for posting them.

Language evolves. In the US, it's been well over a hundred years since "nickel" meant any coin other than a five-cent piece. One-cent pieces have been called "pennies" even longer than that.

There are quite a few people here who refuse to stop picking the "penny vs. cent" nit. Where are you all when people talk about "copper" Lincoln cents, even though they're ACTUALLY brass or bronze?

i don’t think anyone refuses not say or say anything. It’s just some have not been collecting or into coins as long as some have been on this site.
The first time someone came up to me and asked for hard quarter at the bank, I asked, a hard quarter?
I do not think anything is right or wrong as long as the point is understood. New people come on, a “newbie” we are called. Here to learn and talk about coins and stories behind them. Some seem to care but then some don’t. Their choice.
That is like, the guidelines for coin dealers and buyer’s etiquette. Has anyone read that? Hmmmm! Again, common sense or cents, whatever you choose. :)

Okay, that one I had to look up -- and when the first Google result is from Urban Dictionary, I always think twice about adding it to my own vocabulary. ;)

Yes, it’s been around a while. You adjust to what people ask you in their own way. ;)

    John Skelton Morgan man!

Seems like we wouldn't have to make any more cents if everyone stopped coating floors, cars, and toilet seats with them and just use them as money.

Nothing in a coin is more beautiful than the bright red or orange luster of a copper cent.

I totally agree! You might not know why I chose those words. The copper “cent” or penny is a beautiful coin and I have many wheats etc. Going through many of my father’s coins and I was just focusing on Lincoln’s. Got a little teased for it. Beautiful Lincoln! :)
