More than it’s cracked up to be...

Found this 1897 6 pence. When I examined the reverse I saw the surface is suffering from many cracks. Looks like a dried mudbank or my grandmother’s cheeks.

is this likely to be a lamination problem or simple damage?

Wow. I can't say what caused that but it is very interesting.

 

Looks like it was in the ground for a while,so some kind of environmental reaction caused the cracks?cool coin otherwise.

It's environmental damage. The coin was exposed to something that etched the metal.
